Oral melanoma

A previously healthy young male of Southeast Asian descent presented with 6 weeks of fevers, cough, mucocutaneous ulcers, arthritis, and myalgias. Initial workup revealed positive Mycoplasma pneumoniae immunoglobulin M, and the patient was treated with antibiotics without relief of symptoms.

A five years old Non-descript bullock was brought to the veterinary dispensary vadamathimangalam, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu with a history of oral mucous membrane swelling. Clinical examination revealed about 2cm diameter black colored mass was observed below the last incisor of left lower jaw region. The mass was removed by surgical intervention and sent to Department of Veterinary Pathology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai- 600007 for histopthological examination. Grossly the mass was about 2cm in diameter, spherical black colored firm nodule with smooth surface.

The average annual incidence rates of certain cancers, including cervical, esophageal, liver, oral cavity and pharynx, and stomach cancer were significantly higher in the poorest areas in New Jersey as compared to the wealthiest areas. Among men, lung cancer incidence rates were significantly higher in the poorest areas, while lung cancer rates for women did not differ substantially among the three poverty area groups (areas with high poverty, medium poverty, and low poverty).

Average annual age-adjusted cancer incidence rates were calculated for each poverty area group in New Jersey. Included in the report are the average annual age-adjusted incidence rates per 100,000 population for all types of cancer combined and 16 cancers that are the most common types among men and/or women, or among the leading causes of cancer death.

Socioeconomic disparities in cancer incidence and mortality in the United States persist and remain an urgent public health problem. Recent studies of cancer and both individual- and area- level socioeconomic status (SES) have found low SES or poverty to be associated with higher incidence of lung, cervical, stomach, oral, and esophageal cancer. 1-8 Also, a lower incidence of breast cancer and melanoma has been observed among persons residing in poorer areas.
