Root is the prime organ that sucks water and nutrients from deep layer of soil. Wild barley diversity exhibits remarkable variation in root system architecture that seems crucial in its adaptation to abiotic stresses like drought. In the present study, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping of root and related shoot traits under control and drought conditions using a population of wild barley introgression lines (ILs).

Results obtained indicated that both RS-compost and OMW-compost had positive effects on soil properties where barley growth and productivity were more than the conventional organic fertilization under saline conditions; yet, applying OMW-compost under the saline conditions should be under precautions to prevent increasing the EC of the soil.

Powdery mildews are biotrophic pathogenic fungi infecting a number of economically important plants. The grass powdery mildew, Blumeria graminis, has become a model organism to study host specialization of obligate biotrophic fungal pathogens. We resolved the large-scale genomic architecture of B. graminis forma specialis hordei (Bgh) to explore the potential influence of its genome organization on the co-evolutionary process with its host plant, barley (Hordeum vulgare).

Pearlmillet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is largely grown for grain and fodder purpose under those situations where other crops generally fail. Pearlmillet as a food crop is limited to the developing countries in Asia, and particularly in Africa and ranked sixth in the world followed by rice, wheat, maize, barley and sorghum (Anonymous, 2010-11).

Photosynthetic organs of the cereal spike (ear) provide assimilate for grain filling, but their response to drought is poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the drought response of individual organs of the barley spike (awn, lemma, and palea) and compared them with a vegetative organ (fifth leaf).

Small ROP (also called RAC) GTPases are key factors in polar cell development and in interaction with the environment. ROP-Interactive Partner (RIP) proteins are predicted scaffold or ROP-effector proteins, which function downstream of activated GTP-loaded ROP proteins in establishing membrane heterogeneity and cellular organization.

A field experiment was conducted at Main Experimental Station of Narendra Deva University of Agriculture & Technology, (Kumarganj), Ayodhya (U.P.) during Rabi season of 2016-17 to study the performance of barley varieties under various nitrogen levels in sodic soil. The trial was laid out in Split Plot Design. Nitrogen levels (60, 75 and 90 kg N ha-1 ) were kept in main-plots and varieties (RD-2907, RD-2552, NDB-1173 and RD-2794) in sub-plots with three replications on sodic soils having low organic carbon (0.38 g kg-1 ), available nitrogen (185.0 kg ha-1 ), phosphorus (15.

The number of certified organic farms in Canada has also been on the rise, increasing 60% between 2001 and 2006. In 2006, there were about 3,500 certified organic farms, representing 1.5% of all farms in Canada [6]. Nearly half (45%) of these farms are situated in the Prairie Provinces, with Saskatchewan accounting for about one-third of the nationwide total. Like their conventional counterparts, most (95%) organic producers on the Prairies are engaged in the production of hay or field crops, primarily wheat and barley, but also including a variety of other grains, pulses....
