Organic cucumber

Efficacy of combining varietal resistance with organic fertilizer application in reducing infestation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus) by insect pests was studied during the early cropping season of 2013 at the Teaching and Research Farm, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The present study was carried out to determine the effectiveness of combining varietal resistance with organic fertilizer application on infestation of cucumber by insect pests.

The cucumber is one of the most important vegetables worldwide and is used as a research model for study of phloem transport, sex determination and temperature-photoperiod physiology. The shoot apex is the most important plant tissue in which the cell fate and organ meristems have been determined. In this study, a series of whole-genome small RNA, degradome and transcriptome analyses were performed on cucumber shoot apical tissues treated with high vs. low temperature and long vs. short photoperiod.

Antioxidants and β-glucuronidase inhibitors have been used for treatment and prevention of various human diseases. The study aimed to investigate the antioxidant and β-glucuronidase inhibitory activities of the aqueous methanolic extract (80% MeOH) and its solvent fractions (n-hexane, CHCl3, EtOAc, BuOH, and water) prepared from the internal organs of sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus. The antioxidant and β-glucuronidase inhibitory properties varied between the solvent extract and fractions.

Crown rot of cucumber (Cucumis sativum) caused by Fusarium solani. The present investigations carried out the All combination i.e. Benomyl + Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma harzianum + Neem cake and Benomyl + Neem cake were found effective to reduce disease incidence of crown rot of cucumber over check at 40 and 60 days after sowing.

In this study, a novel metal-organic framework (M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67) was successfully prepared using the single layer Fe3O4-ZIF-8 as magnetic core and wrapped a layer of ZIF-67 outer. This M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was employed as an adsorbent for the adsorption and removal of fipronil and its metabolites from environmental water and cucumber samples. The characterization results suggested that M-ZIF-8@ZIF-67 has the double layer structure a polyhedral structure with uniform pores, while ZIF-67 was successfully coated on the surface of Fe3O4-ZIF-8.

The experiment was conducted at College of Horticulture and Forestry, Central Agricultural University, Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh to study the effect of integrated nutrient management on growth and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) grown under protected condition. It was laid out in Randomized Block Design comprising of thirteen treatments replicated thrice. The experiment was conducted during the off season with gynoecious hybrid variety KSP-1301. Integration of inorganic fertilizers, organic manures and biofertilizers has increased the efficacy of the nutrients in the soil.

Cucumber vascular wilt pathogen, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum is one of the most destructive organisms that hampers the cucumber production under protected cultivation and results in huge economic loss to farmers. Trichoderma spp., a potent biocontrol agent screened against F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum in vitro resulted that T. virens TRI 37 effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of pathogen to about 68.0% compared to other isolates. An oil based formulation of effective Trichoderma spp. was developed with initial conidial concentration of 1 1010.
