Otitis externa is an inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal. It is usually associated with secondary bacterial and/or fungal infection of macerated skin and subcutaneous cellular tissue. Aim of the study is to isolate and identify species of bacteria in patients with clinical diagnosis of Acute Otitis Externa and to know the susceptibility of microorganisms to the antimicrobial drugs. This study involved 103 patients with otitis externa.

The present study was conducted to record the prevalence percentage (%), suitable cytological diagnostic procedure followed by isolation of causative agent and effective therapies against otitis externa. A total of 281 dogs irrespective of age, breed and sex from various sources i.e. dogs presented to T.V.C.C., Anjora and different Government Veterinary Hospitals in and around Durg were included in the present study. Based on clinical examination, 51 dogs were found to be positive for otitis externa.

A total 116 dogs were presented with various affections of the ear, among them 67 (57.76%) cases were having the symptoms of otitis. The higher incidence was found in the age groups of 1-5 year (44.77%, n=30) followed other age groups. The breed wise incidence of was found to be highest in the Labrador (35.82%, n=24) followed by other breeds. 35 cases had bilateral (52.23%), 21 dogs had only right side ear (31.34%) involvement and 11 dogs had left side ear (16.41%) infection. Out of total 67 cases 58.20 percent (n=39) cases were male and 41.80% percent (n=28) cases were female.

Chronic otitis externa is caused primarily by repeated local irritation, most commonly arising from persistent drainage from a chronic middle-ear infection. Other causes of repeated irritation, such as insertion of cotton swabs or other foreign objects into the ear canal, can lead to this condition, as can rare chronic infections such as syphilis, tuberculosis, or leprosy.
