Paclitaxel, a tubulin-binding agent, is a Food and Drug Administration-approved first-line drug for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), for both squamous and non-squamous cell lung carcinoma, with paclitaxel/carboplatin+bevacizumab a common chemotherapy regimen for stage IV non-squamous NSCLC; however, primary or acquired resistance to paclitaxel is gradually increasing, leading to treatment failure.

Glioblastoma patients commonly develop resistance to temozolomide chemotherapy. Hypoxia, which supports chemotherapy resistance, favors the expansion of glioblastoma stem cells (GSC), contributing to tumor relapse. Because of a deregulated sphingolipid metabolism, glioblastoma tissues contain high levels of the pro-survival sphingosine-1-phosphate and low levels of the pro-apoptotic ceramide.

Identification of genes whose basal mRNA expression predicts the sensitivity of tumor cells to cytotoxic treatments can play an important role in individualized cancer medicine. It enables detailed characterization of the mechanism of action of drugs. Furthermore, screening the expression of these genes in the tumor tissue may suggest the best course of chemotherapy or a combination of drugs to overcome drug resistance.

Overcoming drug resistance is critical for increasing the survival rate of prostate cancer (PCa). Doc‑ etaxel is the first cytotoxic chemotherapeutical approved for treatment of PCa. However, 99% of PCa patients will develop resistance to docetaxel within 3 years. Understanding how resistance arises is important to increasing PCa survival.

Glycopeptide antibiotics inhibit bacterial cell-wall synthesis, and are important for the treatment of infections caused by multi drug-resistant strains of enterococci, streptococci and staphylococci. The main mechanism by which bacteria resist the action of glycopeptides is by producing a modified cell-wall in which the dipeptide D-Alanine-D-Alanine is substituted by D-Alanine-D-Lactate or D-Alanine-D-Serine. Recently, it has been shown that inorganic phosphate (Pi) induces hypersensitivity to vancomycin in Streptomyces coelicolor (which is highly resistant to the antibiotic in low-Pi media).

Drug resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) remains a global health problem. The diagnosis, treatment, and management of DR-TB are the major challenges to Vietnam National Tuberculosis Control Program. One of the most important solutions for overcoming this problem is developing reliable and low-cost methods, which have been proposed to Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) to detect drug resistant tuberculosis. The methods have to be reasonably simple so that they can be widely used in provincial Lung hospitals.

The PI 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway has been implicated as a target for melanoma therapy. Methods: Given the high degree of genetic heterogeneity in melanoma, we sought to understand the breadth of variation in PI3K signalling in the large NZM panel of early passage cell lines developed from metastatic melanomas.

It is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of individual drugs on patients to realize personalized medicine. Testing drugs on patients in clinical trial is the only way to evaluate the efficacy of drugs. The approach is labour intensive and requires overwhelming costs and a number of experiments.

Cancer cells may undergo metabolic adaptations that support their growth as well as drug resistance properties. The purpose of this study is to test if oral cancer cells can overcome the metabolic defects introduced by using small interfering RNA (siRNA) to knock down their expression of important metabolic enzymes.

Doxorubicin (Dox) is widely used to treat progressed bladder cancer after transurethral resection. The use of Dox-chemotherapy has been limited due to induced drug resistance and cumulative cardiotoxic effects. N-benzyladriamycin-14-valerate (AD198), a novel derivative of Dox, has a potential to become a more effective treatment than Dox by overcoming drug resistance and cardio-toxicity as shown in the rodent model of lymphoma in vivo.

Platinum-based drugs are used as cancer chemotherapeutics for the last 40 years. However, drug resistance and nephrotoxicity are the major limitations of the use of platinum-based compounds in cancer therapy. Platinum (IV) complexes are believed to act as platinum prodrugs and are able to overcome some of platinum (II) limitations.

Combination drug therapy appears a promising approach to overcome drug resistance and reduce drug-related toxicities in ovarian cancer treatments. In this in vitro study, we evaluated the antitumor efficacy of cisplatin in combination with Bithionol (BT) against a panel of ovarian cancer cell lines with special focus on cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant cell lines.

The RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway is one of the most downregulated pathway in cancer. Inhibitors of RAF and MEK have established clinical use while ERK inhibitors recently faced the clinic. We aimed to generate resistant cell lines which could be helpful for defining new combinations able to overcome resistance.

Treatment with a combination of drugs has been used as an approach to overcome bacterial resistance. The combination of compounds can have synergistic, addictive, or antagonistic effects. The synergistic effect of antibacterial compounds combined is expected to increase antibacterial activity so as to prevent the occurrence of resistance. Betel (Piper betle L.) and red betel (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav.) leaves have antibacterial activity. This study compared the antibacterial activity of betel, red betel, to the combinations of betel and red betel.

Bacterial infections are a major cause of chronic infections and mortality. Drug resistant microorganisms pose a serious public health problem and strategies for controlling bacterial activity are needed. Nanoparticles have emerged as a novel alternative to overcome bacterial multidrug resistance due to misuse and abuse of antibiotics.

Resistance in pathogenic bacteria against antibiotics is a challenge for our clinicians for the management of various infections. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has caused great concern among health professionals and the prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms has been increasing. Over-ambitious use of broad spectrum antibiotics is playing an important role in the increased incidence of infections due to MDR bacteria. Multiple drug resistance (MDR) mediated through R plasmids among Gram-negative bacteria has become a major nosocomial problem worldwide.

Chemotherapy is one of effective methods for the treatment of tumor. Patients often develop drug resistance after chemotherapic cycles. Salmonella has potential as antitumor agent. Salmonella used in tandem with chemotherapy had additive effects, providing a rationale for using tumor-targeting Salmonella in combination with conventional chemotherapy.
