Sea level sojourners, on ascent to high altitude, undergo acclimatization through integrated physiological processes for defending the body against oxygen deprivation while the high altitude natives (resident population) are adapted to the prevailing hypobaric hypoxic condition through natural selection.

The uncontrolled proliferation of cancer cells determines hypoxic conditions within the neoplastic mass with consequent activation of specific molecular pathways that allow cells to survive despite oxygen deprivation. The same molecular pathways are often the cause of chemoresistance. This study aims to investigate the role of the hypoxia-induced miR-675-5p in 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) resistance on colorectal cancer (CRC) cells.

In this study, two indigenous Chlorella strains were evaluated for triacylglycerol (TAG) production and related parameters during 10 days of N-deprivation. The strains were identified based on morphological characteristics and genomic information, named as Chlorella sp. IMU12 and Chlorella sp. IMU17. Time-dependent reduction of growth was accompanied by decreased chlorophyll content, reduced oxygen evolution ratio, and elevated carotenoid content of both strains cultivated in N-free Bold’s basal medium.

The present study aims to investigate the neuroprotective effects of PNG extract and its ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 on ischemic neuronal damage caused by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) in mouse organotypic hippocampal slice cultures (OHSCs). Before the experiments, hippocampal slices collected from 7-day-old Swiss mice were cultured for 7 days. OGD was triggered in OHSCs for 30, 60, or 90 min with the aim of finding the optimal period of OGD for drug testing.

Environment inside even a small tumor is characterized by total (anoxia) or partial oxygen deprivation, (hypoxia). It has been shown that radiotherapy and some conventional chemotherapies may be less effective in hypoxia, and therefore it is important to investigate how different drugs act in different microenvironments.

Regions within solid tumours often experience oxygen deprivation, which is associated with resistance to chemotherapy and irradiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiosensitising effect of gemcitabine and its main metabolite dFdU under normoxia versus hypoxia and to determine whether hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) is involved in the radiosensitising mechanism.

Cancer cells modify the balance between fatty acid (FA) synthesis and uptake under metabolic stress, induced by oxygen/nutrient deprivation. These modifications were shown to alter the levels of individual triglyceride (TG) or phospholipid sub-species.

The induction of alcohol fermentation in roots is a plant adaptive response to flooding stress and oxygen deprivation. Available transcriptomic data suggest that fermentation-related genes are also frequently induced in roots infected with gall forming pathogens, but the biological significance of this induction is unclear.

Pyruvate kinase (Pyk) catalyzes the generation of pyruvate and ATP in glycolysis and functions as a key switch in the regulation of carbon flux distribution. Both the substrates and products of Pyk are involved in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, anaplerosis and energy anabolism, which places Pyk at a primary metabolic intersection.

In the past it has been postulated that the metabolism of hump fat could supply water to the fluid compartments when the camel is water deprived. While water is a by-product of carbohydrate and fat metabolism, it is now known that the act of gaining the oxygen required would cause the loss of more water than would be gained. Also, cellular metabolism creates heat and the camel’s survival strategy, especially during periods of water deprivation, is to reduce metabolic rate and hence heat production and water loss.

To understand the potential paracrine roles of interleukin-1b (IL-1b), tumour necrosis factor-a(TNF-a) and interleukin-10 (IL-10), the expres-sion and secretion of these factors by rat bone marrow-derived mesenchy-mal cells stimulated by hypoxia (4% oxygen) and serum deprivation (hypoxia⁄SD) were investigated.
