We sought to evaluate the effect of mild hypercapnia on brain tissue oxygen tension (Pbto2) and diffusion limitation (impaired ability of oxygen extraction) in a porcine post asphyxial cardiac arrest model. Methods: In 16 Bama pigs, asphyxial cardiac arrest was induced by endotracheal tube clamping and remained untreated for another 4 min.

We evaluated the change of cerebral regional tissue oxygen saturation (rSO2) along with the pneumoperitoneum and the Trendelenburg position. We also assessed the relationship between the change of rSO2 and the changes of mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2), arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), or arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2).

Increase of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) is an efficient method of modulating pulmonary and systemic blood flows (Qp/Qs) for patients with left-to-right (L-R) shunt, and is also closely associated with insufficient oxygen exchange for pulmonary hypoperfusion.

More than fifty percent of neuroblastoma (NB) patients with adverse prognosis do not benefit from treatment making the identification of new potential targets mandatory. Hypoxia is a condition of low oxygen tension, occurring in poorly vascularized tissues, which activates specific genes and contributes to the acquisition of the tumor aggressive phenotype.

Overcoming resistance to treatment is an essential issue in many cancers including glioblastoma (GBM), the deadliest primary tumor of the central nervous system. As dependence on iron is a key feature of tumor cells, using chelators to reduce iron represents an opportunity to improve conventional GBM therapies.

Continuous monitoring of SpO2 in the neonatal ICU is the standard of care. Changes in SpO2 exposure have been shown to markedly impact outcome, but limiting extreme episodes is an arduous task.

Dissolved oxygen tension (DOT) is hardly constant and homogenously distributed in a bioreactor, which can have a negative impact in the metabolism and product synthesis. However, the effects of DOT on plasmid DNA (pDNA) production and quality have not been thoroughly investigated.

Ectopic ossification and increased vascularization are two common phenomena in the chronic tendinopathic tendon. The increased vascularization usually leads to an elevated local oxygen tension which is one of micro-environments that can influence differentiate status of stem cells.

Hypoxia plays an important role in the vascular tone of pulmonary circulation via the vasculature and parenchymal tissue. Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictive peptide, plays a role in inflammation in mononuclear cells. Nitric oxide synthase (NOS), which generates nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic 3', 5'-monophosphate (cGMP), is coexpressed with ET-1 in many cell types.

The formation of disulfide bonds in the endoplasmic reti-culum requires protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and endoplasmic reticulum oxidoreductin 1 (ERO1) that reoxi-dizes PDI. We report here that the expression of the rat, mouse andhumanhomologues ofERO1-Likeproteinabut not of the isoform ERO1-Lbare stimulated by hypoxia in rats vivo and in rat, mouse and human cell cultures.

In this study, we have characterized the influence of hypoxia on the expression of hydroxylases crucially involved in col-lagen fiber formation, such as prolyl-4-hydroxylases (Ph4) and procollagen lysyl-hydroxylases (PLOD). Using the rat vascular smooth muscle cell line A7r5, we found that an hypoxic atmosphere caused a characteristic time-dependent five- to 12-fold up-regulation of the mRNAs of the two P4h a-subunits [aI (P4ha1) andaII (P4ha2)] and of two lysyl-hydroxylases (PLOD1 and PLOD2).

The nitrite reductase activity of deoxyhemoglobin has received much recent interest because the nitric oxide produced in this reaction may participate in blood flow regulation during hypoxia. The present study used spectral deconvolution to characterize the reaction of nitrite with carp and rabbit hemoglobin at different constant oxygen tensions that generate the full range of physiological relevant oxygen saturations.

Anaerobic bacteria are organisms that require reduced oxygen tension for growth, failing to grow on the surface of solid media in 10% CO 2 in air. (In contrast, microaerophilic bacteria can grow in an atmosphere of 10% CO2 in air or under anaerobic or aerobic conditions, although they grow best in the presence of only a small amount of atmospheric oxygen, and facultative bacteria can grow in the presence or absence of air.) This chapter describes infections caused by nonsporulating anaerobic bacteria. In general, anaerobes associated with human infections are relatively aerotolerant. ...

Vascular dysfunction may also reduce oxygen delivery to gingival tissue. Pocket oxygen tension was reported to be significantly lower in smokers than non-smokers providing support for the negative effects of smoking on vascular system (Hanioka et al. 2000). Evidence from both human and experimental studies suggests that smoking has a long-term chronic effect, and its effect is not simply a vasoconstriction.

White and Gibson Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research 2010, 5:27 http://www.josr-online.com/content/5/1/27 RESEARCH ARTICLE Research article Open Access The effect of oxygen tension on calcium homeostasis in bovine articular chondrocytes Rachel White and John S Gibson* Abstract Background: Articular chondrocytes normally experience a lower O2 tension compared to that seen by many other tissues. This level may fall further in joint disease. Ionic homeostasis is essential for chondrocyte function but, at least in the case of H+ ions, it is sensitive to changes in O2 levels.
