Bệnh này có thể do một số loài nấm như Phytopphthora palmivora, P. cactorum...nhưng trong điều kiện nhiệt đới nóng, ẩm như ở nước ta thì thường là do nấm P. palmivora và đôi khi có cả nấm Pythium ultimum gây ra.
