  • Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancer types among women in developing countries. Women’s behavior in the early detection of the disease is influenced by sociocultural factors. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the effect of an educational intervention based on PEN-3 model on women’s participation in cervical cancer screening.

  • Cervical cancer (CC) can be prevented through early detection facilitated by screening as well as an early diagnosis and effective treatment of the precancerous lesions. The present research aimed to determine the predictors of cervical cancer screening (CCS) based on the PEN-3 model constructs.

  • Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women globally despite being a largely treatable and preventable malignancy. Developing countries account for over 80% of all new cases. Women residing in lowresource settings such as those residing in slums have a higher risk of cervical cancer, and lower uptake of cervical cancer screening.

  • Poor attendance to cervical cancer (CC) screening is a major risk factor for CC. Efforts to capture underscreened women are considerable and once women agree to participate, the provision of longitudinal validity of the screening test is of paramount relevance.

  • Well-organised quality-controlled screening can substantially reduce the burden of cervical cancer (CC). European guidelines (EuG) for quality assurance in CC screening provide guidance on all aspects of an organised screening programme. Organised CC screening in Poland was introduced in 2007.

  • Cancer screening awareness and participation may be lower in low- and middle-income countries that lack established national screening programmes compared with those that do. We evaluated potential determinants of awareness about and participation in breast and cervical cancer screening, and breast selfexamination (BSE) in women using survey data from Indonesia.

  • This study was conducted to analyse the incidence of various lesions of uterine cervix, inflammatory as well as malignant and to find the age group of patients who can benefit from this screening. Smears were collected from325 patients in the age group 20 to 70 years, between July 2014 to December 2016. These patients complained of white discharge, pain abdomen, post menopausal bleeding and mass per vagina. The slides were fixed in 95% ethyl alcohol, and stained with PAP stain. The slides were screened according to 2001 Bethesda System by two cytopathologists.

  • Cervical cancer is the second most prevalent cancer among women worldwide, and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been identified as the causal agent for this condition. The natural history of cervical cancer is characterized by slow disease progression, rendering the condition in essence preventable and even treatable when diagnosed in early stages.

  • Those of us involved in the healthcare of women have seen a remarkable transformation in screening techniques for cervical cancer and its precursors since the mid 1990s. The staid old Pap smear technique of scraping cells from the cervix with a wooden spatula and cotton-tipped applicator and smearing them onto a glass slide is a thing of the past in most practices. We now use plastic collection devices to transfer cells from the cervix into a preservative which is sent to the lab for liquidbased cytology and reflex human papillomavirus (HPV) testing.

  • Cancer registries can play an important role in the evaluation and mon- itoring of screening programmes aimed at detecting pre-invasive condi- tions. Cancer registration data have been used in routine-data-based stud- ies to examine trends in disease rates in relation to screening frequencies within a population and to compare disease rates between different popu- lations with the coverage offered by their screening programmes (see Section 16.3.1).

  • Investigators continue to evaluate screening technologies in meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials, and cervical cancer prevention programs. The new evidence adds support for the use of HPV DNA testing as the primary technology for cervical cancer screening, both in high-resource areas and in developing countries. 6–8 Despite this evidence, significant barriers to widespread use of HPV DNA testing stand in the way, both in high- and low-resource areas.

  • If a patient has previously undergone a hysterectomy, the cervix is usually no longer present and only a vaginal cuff remains. If the pathology was benign, then the patient no longer requires Pap smears (11). However, if the hysterectomy was performed for cervical cancer or dysplasia, cervical cancer screening on the vaginal cuff should continue since remnants of cervical tissue may be present. These women are also at higher risk for vaginal in- traepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) and vaginal cancer.

  • Exfoliative cytologic examination of specimens from the lower genital tract (Pap smear) is a screening tool that has been so valuable in the detection of premalignant and malignant lesions that it has been almost universally adopted as the primary cancer screening method for cervical cancer, an integral part of the health care of women. This has resulted in a 50% reduction of invasive cancers of the cervix alone. Although cervical cytology may detect endometrial cancer (in 15%–50%), it does not carry the same reliability as a screening tool for endometrial neoplasia. ...
