During survey from March 2014 to October 2015, in Barasat, West Bengal, India, incidence of symptoms suggestive of virus infection was observed in Coccinia grandis. Infected plants were showing typical symptoms including leaf curling, crinkled leaves, leaf yellowing and stunted growth. Symptomatic plant samples were tested for the presence of potyvirus and geminivirus.

There have been numerous attempts to transfer Papaya ringspot virus type P (PRSV-P) resistance from wild Vasconcellea relatives to Carica papaya L. Success has been limited by the high degree of genetic divergence and incompatibility. In the present work, the advanced intergeneric population of Carica papaya (var. Arka Surya) and Vasconcellea cauliflora were evaluated for morphological, fruit traits and PRSV- P tolerance.

Papaya is major tropical fruit gaining importance throughout the tropics and subtropics but there is a severe restriction in its production due to the serious disease known as Papaya Ring Spot Virus (PRSV-P). No papaya variety till date was identified as having durable resistance to PRSV-P; whereas several species of Vasconcellea, a close relative of papaya was reported to have heritable resistance to Papaya Ring Spot Virus.

Papaya is an economical fruit crop in Kadapa district of AP and Kodur region is a traditional belt for cultivation from early 1990’s. The cultivation was with dioecious varieties initially and as the time progressed gynodioecious varieties (Taiwan Red lady) were introduced in the Indian market. Intergeneric hybridization was carried out to know the cross compatibility between papaya varieties (Arka Prabhath, Arka Surya and Red Lady) with Vasconcellea species (V. cauliflora, V. cundinamarcensis and V. parviflora). Arka Prabhath was found to be a good combiner with all the three wild species (V. cauliflora, V. cundinamarcensis and V. parviflora) which has recorded good fruit set (85.42, 78.13 and 84.38 % respectively), fruit retention (98.96, 83.33 and 73.96 % respectively) and more mean number of fertile seeds per fruit (63.99, 70.82 and 28.14 respectively).

Papaya ring spot virus (PRSV) is the most destructive disease of Papaya, responsible for yield reduction of Papaya all over the world. PRSV exhibited different types of symptoms on Papaya plant in the field like ringspot , vein clearing, vein banding, chlorosis of younger leaves, filiformy, shoestring, mosaic, mottling, stunted growth etc. Molecular diagnosis of PRSV was done with the help of gene specific primers through PCR. Gel electrophoresis results show a 300bp clear band which confirms the presence of PRSV in the plants. Sequencing was done and phylogenetic tree was made.
