Ebook "Communicable diseases of the developing world" reviews the current strategies and challenges for the treatment of bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infectious diseases in developing countries. Contributing authors present expert analysis on the transmission, epidemiology, bacteriology, pathogenesis and treatment of Neglected Tropical Bacterial Diseases such as Leprosy, Buruli ulcer, and Trachoma. Particular attention is also given to current antifungal agents, their spectrum of activity, mode of action, limitations, and current challenges in antifungal therapy.

Ebook "Neuropeptide systems as targets for parasite and pest control" was assembled to focus attention on this promising field by compiling a comprehensive review of recent research on neuropeptides in arthropods and helminths, with contributions from many of the leading laboratories working on these systems. The need to continually discover new agents for the control or treatment of invertebrate pests and pathogens is undeniable. Agriculture, both animal and plant, succeeds only to the extent that arthropod and helminth consumers, vectors and pathogens can be kept at bay.

Subcutaneous dirofilariasis is a parasitic zoonosis commonly described in Canidae but rarely seen in humans. Most physicians are unfamiliar with this disease, especially in nonendemic areas, which can lead to medication error and diagnostic and treatment delay.

There are three main forms of leishmaniases: Visceral (the most serious form because it is almost always fatal without treatment), cutaneous (the most common, usually causing skin ulcers), and mucocutaneous (afecting mouth, nose, and throat). Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoan parasites, which are transmitted by the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandfies.

Neonatal diarrhea remains one of the main causes of morbi-mortality in dairy calves under artificial rearing. It is often caused by infectious agents of viral, bacterial, or parasitic origin. Cows vaccination and colostrum intake by calves during the first 6 h of life are critical strategies to prevent severe diarrhea but these are still insufficient.

Histomonas meleagridis is a protozoan parasite and the causative agent of histomonosis, an important poultry disease whose significance is underlined by the absence of any treatment and prophylaxis. The recent successful in vitro attenuation of the parasite urges questions about the underlying mechanisms.

Tapinanthus dodoneifolius (Loranthaceae) is an epiphytic parasitic plant used in the treatment of cholera, asthma, hypertension, and diabetes. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of the aqueous extract of the leaves of T. dodoneifolius (Loranthaceae) in the Wistar rat. Type 1 diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin into the single dose of 60 mg/kg.

Neobenedenia girellae is one of the most pathogenic parasites affecting marine fish in captivity conditions. The use of chemicals for parasite prevention and treatment have several benefits; however, they can cause various negative side-effects. In an effort to discover cost-effective and sustainable practices, our current study was aimed at investigating the efficiency of freshwater treatments on N. girellae. A challenge test was conducted to produce infected fish which became materials for the freshwater immersion experiments.

This review summarizes the literature on the preventive and curative options for the control and treatment of histomoniasis. Two main approaches to the prophylaxis of the disease were found, which included chemotherapies and plant substrate products. Histostat-50 and paromomycin were the only available drugs that showed antihistomonal activity despite some concern about their threat to human health and antibiotic resistance. None of the plant substrate products provided potential protection to birds against blackhead disease.
