Single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has become a mainstream tool for the structural determination of biological macromolecular complexes. However, high-resolution cryo-EM reconstruction often requires hundreds of thousands of single-particle images.

Results show how different settings of kanban influence the performance of the assembly line feeding system. The biggest novelty item is certainly the recognition of the trade-off between kanban size and number of kanban and the importance of investigating its behaviour during the design of the system.

Macrophages are equipped with several receptors for the recognition of foreign particles and pathogens. Upon binding to these receptors, particles become internalized. An interaction of particles with macrophage surface receptors is accompanied by an increase in cytosolic calcium concentration.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease of cloven hoofed animals caused by FMD virus classified under genus Apthovirus and Picornaviridae family. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to FMDV provides best tool for the development of reliable diagnostics and there is a need for the development of mAbs that specifically recognize either 146S or 12S for the quality control analysis of FMDV vaccines. In the present study, we developed mAbs specific to FMDV serotype O and characterized their specificity in recognition of 146S or 12S particles.

In the accompanying paper [Adams, H., Scotti, P.A., de Cock, H., Luirink, J. & Tommassen, J. (2002)Eur. J. Bio-chem.269, 5564–5571.], we showed that the precursor of outer-membrane proteinPhoEofEscherichia coliwithaGly to Leu substitution at position )10 in the signal sequence (G-10L) is targeted to the SecYEGtranslocon via the signal-recognition particle (SRP) route, instead of via the SecB pathway. Here, we studied the fate of the mutant precursor in aprlA4mutant strain.

Signal sequences often containa-helix-destabilizing amino acids within the hydrophobic core. In the precursor of the Escherichia coliouter-membrane protein PhoE,the glycine residue at position)10 (Gly )10 ) is thought to be responsible for the break in the a-helix. Previously,we showed that substitution of Gly )10 bya-helix-promoting residues (Ala, Cys or Leu) reduced the proton-motive force dependency of the translocation of the precursor, but the actual role of the helix breaker remained obscure. ...

The bandwidth demands made on any individual par- ticipant in each multicast tree are quite innocuous. For example, an RSS feed generating 4 KB/hour of updates will cause an interior tree node with 16 children to for- ward less than 20 bytes per second of outbound traffic. Due to the extremely low forwarding overhead, we be- lieve that the motivation for freeloading is very small. In the future, we expect richer content feeds, and con- sequently, the potential incentive for freeloading may increase.

Across evolution, the signal recognition particle pathway targets extra-cytoplasmic proteins to membranous trans-location sites. Whereas the pathway has been extensively studied in Eukarya and Bacteria, little is known of this sys-tem in Archaea. In the following, membrane association of FtsY, the prokaryal signal recognition particle receptor, and SRP54, a central component of the signal recognition par-ticle, was addressed in the halophilic archaea Haloferax volcanii.

The mechanosensitive channel with large conductance (MscL) ofEscheri-chia coliis formed by a homopentameric assembly of MscL proteins. Here, we describe MscL biogenesis as determined usingin vivo approaches. Evi-dence is presented that MscL is targeted to the inner membrane via the sig-nal recognition particle (SRP) pathway, and is inserted into the lipid bilayer independently of the Sec machinery.

There is growing recognition of the large health and productivity costs imposed by poor indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in commercial buildings—estimated variously at up to hundreds of billions of dollars per year. This is not surprising as people spend 90% of their time indoors, and the concentration of pollutants indoors is typically higher than outdoors, sometimes by as much as 10 or even 100 times. 6 The relationship between worker comfort/pro- ductivity and building design/operation is com- plicated.

Almost since their inception, the natural sciences, those fields that use the scientific method to study nature, have been divided into two branches: the biological sciences and the physical sciences. In part, this division can be viewed as a convenient social contrivance. However, over time it has also served more functional purposes. Physical scientists, when seeking the fundamental laws, have found it necessary to focus on the simplest of systems—elementary particles, atoms, and molecules—items clearly not alive.

In recognition of the fact that the potential for release of particulate plutonium and transplutonium alpha-emitting elements from nuclear power generation facilities poses questions concerning spatial distribution of dose and the resultant biological effects, the NCRP initiated a new NCRP activity concerned with alpha-emitting particles in lungs. It was not intended that a complete review of the subject would be prepared.
