Ebook "Epigenetics in cardiac disease" describes important advances in our understanding of how environmental conditions affect cardiac gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. Further, it discusses the roles of chromatin modifications (in particular DNA methylation and histone modifications) and of chromatin regulators in the context of cardiac diseases. The book provides readers with an overview of our current understanding of epigenetic regulation in the heart, and will stimulate further research in this exciting field.

Ebook "Prescribing by numbers: Drugs and the definition of disease" highlights the complex historical role of pharmaceuticals in the transformation of disease categories. Greene narrates the expanding definition of the three principal cardiovascular risk factors—hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol—each intersecting with the career of a particular pharmaceutical agent.

The global burden of hypertension is growing, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate differences in the relationship between social capital and hypertension between regions in Sub-Saharan Africa (West vs. South Africa) and within regions (rural vs. urban residence within each country).

Prior studies demonstrate associations between risk factors for obesity and related chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease) and features of the built environment. This is particularly true for rural populations, who have higher rates of obesity, cancer, and other chronic diseases than urban residents.

There is limited information on the causes of death in asthma patients. To determine the causes of death in hospitalized asthmatic patients and to compare with those observed in COPD patients and non-respiratory individuals, with a particular interest in associations with previous cardiovascular disease.

The association between impaired lung function and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors has been shown in adults. However, there is little evidence of such an association in young adults, particularly from South America, where the burden of CVD and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is as high as that observed in more developed countries.

The interaction between the pulmonary function and cardiovascular mechanics is a crucial issue, particularly when treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Synchrogram index is a new parameter that can quantify this interaction and has the potential to apply in COPD patients.

Contributions of symptomatic osteoarthritis and physical function to incident cardiovascular disease
Osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with worsening physical function and a high prevalence of comorbid health conditions. In particular, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is higher in individuals with OA than the general population.

Multimodality treatment improves the chance of survival but increases the risk for long-term side effects in young cancer survivors, so-called” Adolescents and Young Adults“(AYAs). Compared to the general population AYAs have a 5 to 15-fold increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity. Thus, improving modifiable lifestyle risk factors is of particular importance.

Concern for cardiovascular disease (particularly atrial fibrillation-AF) among women with breast cancer is becoming a major issue. We aimed at determining the incidence of cardiovascular disease events (AF, arterial and cardiac events, venous-thromboembolism-VTE) in patients diagnosed with breast cancer, and assessing potential risk factors.

Childhood obesity is a public health problem worldwide. Visceral obesity, particularly associated with cardio-metabolic risk, has been assessed by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, but both methods use sex-and age-specific percentile tables and are influenced by sexual maturity. Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is easier to obtain, does not involve tables and can be used to diagnose visceral obesity, even in normal-weight individuals.

Representing one of the most important lifestyle factors, diet can strongly influence the incidence and onset of cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Recent dietary intervention studies in several mammalian species, including humans, with flavonoid-rich foods, in particular Vitis vinifera (grape), Camellia sinensis (tea), Theobroma cacao (cocoa), and Vaccinium spp. (blueberry), have indicated an ability of these dietary components to improve memory and learning.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is anonprotein-forming sulphur amino acid that plays an important role in remethylation and trans-sulphuration processes. In recent years, it has been suggested that increased levels of plasma Hcy may play a role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, particularly at the cardiovascular level. The pathogenic mechanism of hyperhomocysteinemia, however, has not been clarified.

Populations on dialysis are showing a rapid worldwide increase. In developed countries, remarkable increases in elderly patients and those with diabetes have been noted. In devel‐ oping countries, changes in life style and economic development have made hemodialysis (HD) therapy available to many more patients. In this special issue, reviews of various as‐ pects of HD therapy were submitted from both groups. In particular, various methods for vascular access were discussed by many contributors. From these reviews, the reader will gain precious...

Paso del Norte’s growth has had serious environmental consequences, particularly for air quality, which is the worst on the U.S.–Mexico border. Ciudad Juárez exceeds national ambient air quality standards (official norms) for ozone, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter less than 10 microns in diameter (PM10), and El Paso exceeds national ambient air quality standards for ozone, PM10, and carbon monoxide. An overwhelming body of evidence links such air pollution to respiratory and cardiovascular disease, and to premature mortality (U.S. EPA 1999).

Nutritional counseling and management are becoming important in health care, particularly in the management of a number of chronic conditions and diseases. The publication of this book is timely, because it aims to help physicians and their staffs identify conditions and diseases that can be treated effectively with nutritional intervention, and provides specifics on appropriate counseling and management. The first of the 13 chapters discusses nutritional support for children, with emphasis on premature infants, cystic fibrosis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia....

Opportunity: Obesity is a major cause of morbidity in children and adults. In the US, in 2000, it was responsible for approximately 400,000 deaths and accounted for about 7% of health care expenditures. Obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Furthermore, obesity results in many other adverse conditions and disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, various forms of cancer and chronic respiratory diseases. It augments mortality rate and may truncate lifespan by as much as 5–20 years.

Ventricular tachyarrhythmias are often associated with underlying heart disease such as cardiomyopathy. Torsades de Pointes is a particular form of sinusoidal ventricular arrhythmia that occurs in the rare congenital long QT syndrome.
