Obesity is well known that in various human pathological states such as: essential hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus,... Insulin resistance plays an important role in pathological state of diabetes. Recently, Katz et al provided QUICKI index (Quantitative insulin sensitivity check index) for insulin resistance condition evaluation.

Suburbs in Melbourne present to us a unique context with which a new approach towards urban form can be devised using the existing conditions and opportunities found with infrastructural developments. This thesis contains the investigations on the various 'pathologies' of the urban fabric specifically on the potential use of 'Spaces Left-Over After Planning' as by-product to infrastructural development in relation to the reinvigoration of Melbourne suburbs under the influence of current and future metropolitan growth pressures.

Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s diseases, affect millions of people worldwide and currently there are few effective treatments and no cures for these diseases. Transgenic mice expressing human transgenes for huntingtin, amyloid precursor protein, and other genes associated with familial forms of neurodegenerative disease in humans provide remarkable tools for studying neurodegeneration because they mimic many of the pathological and behavioural features of the human conditions. ...

Cone snails comprise500 species of venomous molluscs, which have evolved the ability to generate multiple toxins with varied and often exquisite selectivity. One class, the a-conotoxins, is proving to be a powerful tool for the differentiation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). These comprise a large family of complex subtypes, whose significance in physiological functions and pathological conditions is increasingly becoming apparent.

Cells in various anatomical locations are constantly exposed to mechanical forces from shear, tensile and compressional forces. These forces are signifi-cantly exaggerated in a number of pathological conditions arising from various etiologies e.g., hypertension, obstruction and hemodynamic over-load.

Deciphering the laws that govern metabolic responses of complex systems is essential to understand physiological functioning, pathological conditions and the outcome of experimental manipulations of intact cells. To this aim, a theoretical and experimental sensitivity analysis, called modular meta-bolic control analysis (MMCA), was proposed.

Caspase-3 is a programmed cell death protease involved in neuronal apop-tosis during physiological development and under pathological conditions. It is a promising therapeutic target for treatment of neurodegenerative dis-eases. We reported previously that isoquinoline-1,3,4-trione and its deriva-tives inhibit caspase-3.

CCN4⁄Wnt-induced secreted protein 1 (WISP1) is one of the CCN (CTGF⁄Cyr61⁄Nov) family proteins. CCN members have typical structures composed of four conserved cysteine-rich modules and their variants lack-ing certain modules, generated by alternative splicing or gene mutations, have been described in various pathological conditions.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family members play impor-tant roles in embryonic development and angiogenesis during wound healing and in pathological conditions such as tumor formation. Parapox-viruses express a new member of the VEGF family which is a functional mitogen that specifically activates VEGF receptor (VEGFR)-2 but not VEGFR-1.

Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-jB) has been proposed to serve a dual func-tion as a regulator of neuron survival in pathological conditions associated with neurodegeneration. NF-jB is a transcription family of factors com-prising five different proteins, namely p50, RelA⁄p65, c-Rel, RelB and p52, which can combine differently to form active dimers in response to external stimuli.

Thrombin generation increases in several pathological conditions, including cancer, thromboembolism, diabetes and myeloproliferative syndromes. During tumor development, thrombin levels increase along with several other molecules, including cytokines and angiogenic factors. Under such conditions, it is reasonable to predict that thrombin may recognize new low-affinity substrates that usually are not recognized under low-expression levels conditions.

Bile acid-binding proteins (BABPs) are cytosolic lipid chaperones that play central roles in driving bile flow, as well as in the adaptation to various pathological conditions, contributing to the maintenance of bile acid homeostasis and functional distribution within the cell.

There is a tightly regulated interaction, which is well-conserved in evolution, between the metabolic and immune systems that is deranged in states of over- or under-nutrition. Obesity, an energy-rich condition, is characterized by the activation of an inflammatory process in metaboli-cally active sites such as adipose tissue, liver and immune cells.

Proteins are occasionally converted from their normal soluble state to highly ordered fibrillar aggregates (amyloids), which give rise to pathologi-cal conditions that range from neurodegenerative disorders to systemic amyloidoses. Recent methodological advances in solid-state NMR and EPR spectroscopy have enabled determination of the 3D structure of sev-eral amyloids at residue-level resolution.

Cathepsin B (EC 3.4.22.1) is one of the most versatile human cysteine cath-epsins. It is important for intracellular protein degradation under normal conditions and is involved in a number of pathological processes. The occluding loop makes cathepsin B unique among cysteine cathepsins.

Abstract Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vascular vitreoretinopathy that affects infants with short gestational age and low birth-weight. The condition is a multifactorial disease and is clinically similar to familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), which is a bilateral hereditary eye disorder affecting full-term infants. Both of them are characterized by the abnormal vessel growth in the vitreous that can lead to vitreoretinal traction, retinal detachment and other complications resulting in blindness.
