During the pathological destruction of lung tissue, neutrophil elastase (NE) degrades elastin, one of the major constituents of lung parenchyma. However there are no non-invasive methods to quantify NE degradation of elastin. We selected specific elastin fragments generated by NE for antibody generation and developed an ELISA assay (EL-NE) for the quantification of NE-degraded elastin.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease which causes significant pain, joint deformity, functional disability. The pathological hallmark of RA is inflammation of the synovium characterized by involvement of inflammatory and resident stromal cells, soluble mediators and signalling pathways leading to irreversible joint destruction.

Fusarium wilt of chickpea is a widely distributed and the most destructive disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri. The main objective of this experiment is to identify the effective Bacillus isolates against Fusarium oxysporium f.sp. ciceri under in vitro condition. A total of five Bacillus spp. isolates (TB1, TB2, TB3, TB4 and TB5) were isolated from rhizhosphere region of tomato and eight Bacillus subtilis isolates (BS4, B, KPB5, KK, BSD3, C1, G1, and B2) were collected from Department of plant pathology TNAU.

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum (Smith) Yabuuchi is one of the most destructive diseases of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum), causing accountable losses of about 10-90 per cent. Present investigations on the disease (R. solanacearum) were carried out during 2014-15 to fulfill the objectives defined, at the Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, VNMKV, Parbhani. A total of 10 organic amendments evaluated (pot culture) as pre- sowing soil applications were found effective against R. solanacearum.

In recent years, the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis has undergone tremendous changes due to methotrexate and biologics in large part. Until a decade ago, avoiding joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis was not realistic for rheumatologist. However, prevention of joint deterioration is now possible, and the quality of life of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in long-term has been able to improve by advances in treatment.

The indications for these surgical procedures were: recurrent hemoptysis (24 cases), massive hemoptysis (4 cases), multi drug resistant TB (4 cases), bronchiectasis and recurrent infection (2 cases), and right bronchial stenosis (1 case). In two of the patients the indication for surgery was intra-bronchial carcinoid tumour. Lymph node biopsies obtained during the surgery showed pathological changes of TB.

Excessive inflammatory responses can be horribly destructive. Unsurprisingly, therefore, immune responses are dampened down and fine-tuned in a multitude of ways to minimize their damaging effects. Four articles in this issue provide examples of such immune regulation on four different levels. Wolfgang Junger (page 201) explains that cells take it upon themselves to control their behaviour to extracellular cues through autocrine feedback loops involving purinergic receptors.

Periodontal disease is one of the major dental pathologies that affect human populations worldwide at high prevalence rates (Petersen, 2003). Periodontal diseases represents a family of heterogeneous chronic inflammatory lesions that involve the periodontium, a connective tissue protected by the epithelium, important to attach the teeth to the bone in the jaws and to support the teeth during function (Taylor, 2003).
