  • This study aimed to find the gene action, GCA and SCA effects for yield, its components and micronutrients and their association with each other. For this, thirty six crosses (hybrids), nine parents and two checks ICTP 8203 Fe and ICMB 98222 (totalling 47 genotypes) were evaluated during Kharif 2014 at three locations viz., IARI, New Delhi (zone A), IARI Regional Centre, Dharwad (zone B) and National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Regional Station, Jodhpur (zone A1). These locations represented all pearl millet growing zones.

  • A field experiment was conducted during kharif, 2018 at Agricultural College Farm, Bapatla to study the phenology and various weather health indices of pearlmillet grown under different spacings and dates of sowing. The crop sown on 2nd fortnight of July accumulated maximum growing degree days, photo thermal units, heat use efficiency, helio thermal use efficiency and photo thermal use efficiency whereas the highest helio thermal units were recorded under 2nd fortnight of August sowing to attain different phenological stages till maturity.

  • Protein, micronutrient, antioxidant potential, polyphenols and phytate content of popular hybrids and composites of pearl millet has been estimated for two consecutive seasons. Crude protein content of pearl millet hybrids and composites analyzed varied from 9.49 to 13.09 and 9.05 to 14.73 %, Fe content from 39 to 66 and 22 to 75 mg/kg, Zn content from 32 to 49 and 21 to 56 mg/kg, polyphenols from 210 to 297 mg/100 g and 221 to 345 mg/100 g, and phytate content from 4.74 to 6.29 and 5.54 to 6.67 mg/g during kharif-2013 and kharif-2014, respectively.

  • Among four isolates of Moesziomyces penicillariae the incitant of pearl millet smut, cultural, morphological and pathogenic variability was studied. The isolates were collected from four different pearl millet growing regions of India. Among the four isolates no variation was observed in size of spore balls but significant variation was observed in their germination percentage. Out of the six different media used, potato dextrose agar medium enriched with 50 g pearl millet grain and 20 g sucrose supported maximum growth of the fungus and least growth was observed in oat meal agar.

  • The earlier released hybrid GHB 558 and latest released hybrid GHB 732 become susceptible to downy mildew disease. Though recently released hybrid GHB 732 is popular but it is susceptible to lodging because of its thin stem. However, in view of versatility of downy mildew fungi for its changes in virulence, farmer based choice differences in different pearl millet growing area of the state and to diversify the genetic base of cultivated public bred pearl millet hybrids. There is an urgent need and demand for a medium duration kharif hybrid with downy mildew and lodging resistance.
