Pentatricopeptide-repeat proteins (PPRs) are characterized by tandem arrays of a degenerate 35-aminoacid (PPR motifs), which can bind RNA strands and participate in post-transcription. PPR proteins family is one of the largest families in land plants and play important roles in organelle RNA metabolism and plant development. However, the functions of PPR genes involved in biotic and abiotic stresses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) remain largely unknown.

Gene expression in plant chloroplasts and mitochondria is affected by RNA editing. Numerous C-to-U conversions, accompanied by reverse U-to-C exchanges in some plant clades, alter the genetic information encoded in the organelle genomes. Predicting and analyzing RNA editing, which ranges from only few sites in some species to thousands in other taxa, is bioinformatically demanding.

Recently, we have identified and purified minisatellite DNA binding proteins (MNBPs) that bind to the mouse hypervariable minisatellite Pc-1, from NIH3T3 cells. This study describes the isolation and characterization of a mouse leucine-rich protein (mLRP130) as one of the MNBPs that binds to the C-rich strand of Pc-1. The mLRP130 cDNA was demonstrated to encode a polypeptide of 1306 aminoacid residues with a deduced molecular mass of 137 kDa, and the mLRP130 mRNA is detected in various organs, including heart, brain, liver, skeletal muscle, kidneys and testes.

The nonphotosynthetic mutant ofArabidopsis hcf152is impaired in the processing of the chloroplast polycistronic transcript, psbB-psbT-psbH-petB-petD, resulting in non-production of the essential photosynthetic cytochromeb6 f complex. The nucleus-encodedHCF152gene was identified to encode a pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein com-posed primarily of 12 PPR motifs, similar to other proteins of this family that were identified in mutants defected in chloroplast gene expression.
