In this study Roselle seed protein isolates were digested using pepsin followed by pancreatin at different time in order to produce hydrolysate with good antioxidant. The prepared hydrolysates were as effective as antioxidants in model systems, in scavenging of free radicals. This effect was concentration-dependent and was also influenced by the hydrolysis time.

A proteomic workflow for a simple loss-less manual nano-fractionation (300 nL/fraction) for low μg sample amounts which avoids the need to dry down or transfer fractions to autosampler vials is shown to be feasible. It is demonstrated that the conventional procedure of drying samples down followed by reconstitution negatively affects the number of protein and peptide identifications.

The majority of infectious diseases of cultured fish is caused by bacteria. Rapid identification of bacterial pathogens is necessary for immediate management. The present study developed a custom Main Spectra Profile (MSP) database and validate the method using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for rapid identification of fish bacterial pathogens.

Crustacean hyperglycaemic hormone (CHH) is a neuropeptide that was originally identified in the X-organ/sinus gland complex of the eyestalks (ESs) in crustaceans. Several CHH isoforms and spliced variants were later identified in other tissues, and their functions have still not been completely unveiled. In this study, the identification and characterisation of the conventional CHH prepropeptide from the ESs of the littoral crab, Carcinus aestuarii, via rapid amplification of cDNA ends was reported.

We report the sequencing, assembly and analysis of the genome of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), the largest extant lizard, with a focus on antimicrobial host-defense peptides. The Komodo dragon diet includes carrion, and a complex milieu of bacteria, including potentially pathogenic strains, has been detected in the saliva of wild dragons.
