Ebook "Food security among small-scale agricultural producers in Southern Africa" focuses on food security highlighting the role of indigenous knowledge and scientific research in addressing the plight of poor small-scale agricultural producers. Rapidly growing global population and global policies and management governing sustainability, hunger, food security and poverty alleviation are discussed. Additionally, impacts of probable climate change, research on land productivity and performance of dependable food crops i.e. cassava and pearl millet are discussed.

Field experiment was conducted during the rainy season of 2015 and 2016 at UAS, Raichur to evaluate the production potential of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) under sole and intercropping with nutri cereal crops under two row proportions of 1:1 and 1:2. Ten treatments consisted of intercropping of pigeonpea with millets (nutri cereals) sorghum, pearl millet and foxtail millet in single and double row proportions and their respective sole stand were evaluated.

An experiment was conducted on plot number C-10, Agronomy Instructional Farm, C. P. College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar during summer season of the year 2012 on Loamy Sand soil. Four hybrids viz., GHB 732, GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 558 were taken under study. Grain and dry fodder yields were significantly higher in case of hybrid GHB 558 as compared to GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 732. Similar response trend was observed in the growth attributes viz., plant height at 60 DAS and harvest, total tillers per plant.

Forty accessions of pearl millet were evaluated for five consecutive years (environments) to assess the magnitude of presence of genetic variability, heritability in broad sense, genetic advance, inter characters correlation and path coefficients for yield and yield contributing characters. All the accessions showed considerable amount of variation in their mean performance with respect to studied characters.

A field experiment was carried out at Agricultural Research Sub Station, Samdari, Rajasthan to evaluate the performance of pearl millet advance hybrids (MH 2192, MPMH 21, HHB 272 and RHB 177) under different levels of nitrogen (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg/ha). Results showed that application of nitrogen at the rate of 60 kg/ha recorded significantly (p < 0.05) higher plant height (119.7 cm) and grain yield (584 kg/ha) as compared to control and 20 kg N/ha but remained at par with 40 kg N/ha.

Pearl millet is important crop of arid parts, mainly grown for fodder and grain. The present productivity level of the arid region is low and needs to be increased. Hybrids have higher potential as compared to OPVs in pearl millet, hence development of large number of hybrids and subsequently its assessment in arid environment is very much essential. 184 single cross hybrids were assessed in arid region of Rajasthan during Kharif 2017 for earliness, grain yield and other traits. Average grain yield of test hybrids was 27.63 q/ha with minimum of 10.2 q/ha and maximum of 42.5 q/ha.
