The effect of perinatal anxiety on bronchiolitis is influenced by polymorphisms in ROS-related genes
Exposure to perinatal anxiety affects disease susceptibility in offspring but studies on the association between perinatal anxiety and gene polymorphisms are lacking. This study aimed to elucidate the interaction between perinatal anxiety and polymorphisms in antioxidant defense and innate immunity genes on the development of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) during early infancy.

The notion of Palliative Care (PC) in neonatal and perinatal medicine has largely developed in recent decades. Our aim was to systematically review the literature on this topic, summarise the evolution of care and, based on the available data, suggest a current standard for this type of care.

Objective: In 2007 and 2008, the Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology issued a recommendation for single embryo transfer (SET). Thereafter, SET was implemented in 73% of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cases in Japan. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of compliance with the SET recommendation on perinatal outcomes.

Hypophosphatasia, a congenital metabolic disease related to the tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase gene (TNSALP), is characterized by reduced serum alkaline phosphatase levels and defective mineralization of hard tis-sues. A replacement of valine with alanine at position 406, located in the crown domain of TNSALP, was reported in a perinatal form of hypophos-phatasia.

While North Carolina still has a long way to go, it is heartening that all of the indicators in the Report Card are being addressed. Through new safety statutes, additional legislative appropriations, and innovative programs introduced by state and local agencies, North Carolina continues to invest in its children. Action for Children North Carolina and the North Carolina Institute of Medicine are pleased to support this effort through the production of study reports and participation in evidence-based decision-making.

Reading a book is like seeing a movie. Word-images pass across our brain screen at a speed of 5 and more words per second and create mental images of things and events. We were too young – 4 to 8 years old – when we acquired this skill, and our memory of this seminal event has faded away. So please sit back for a few seconds, close your eyes and realise what an extraordinary ability reading is: recognising and endowing with meaning, effortlessly and within a fraction of a second, any single subset of 50,000 and more words that inhabit your word brain. This is not...

In 1970, Henry L. Nadler and Albert B. Gerbie helped usher in the era of prenatal genetic diagnosis in their landmark paper ‘‘Role of amniocentesis in the interuterine detection of genetic disorders’’ (N Engl J Med 1970;282:596-9). Since that time, advances in genetics and perinatal medicine have occurred at an amazing pace, allowing physicians to detect and treat genetic disorders in utero with increasing success. There has also been an escalating demand by the public for translational medicine where discoveries in the laboratory are rapidly brought to the bedside.

Diabetes Mellitus in Pregnancy: Treatment Pregnancy complicated by diabetes mellitus is associated with higher maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates. Preconception counseling and treatment are important for the diabetic patient contemplating pregnancy and can reduce the risk of congenital malformations and improve pregnancy outcome. Folate supplementation reduces the incidence of fetal neural tube defects, which occur with greater frequency in fetuses of diabetic mothers.
