The present paper deals with clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment of bovine theileriosis in the crossbred Sahiwal calf, aged about 1 month. In this case report, the clinical signs observed were; high fever (106.7 ˚F), anorexia, dullness, staggering gait, absence of suckling reflex, slight pale mucus membrane, presence of ectoparasites (ticks), and enlarged pre-scapular lymph nodes. The peripheral blood smear and lymph node smear confirmed the presence of piroplasmic organisms and Koch`s blue bodies respectively.

Dengue Fever is a mosquito-borne illness commonly present throughout the tropics. Dengue virus belongs to flaviviridae family and circulates with 4 different serotypes circulating in environment. In India four different serotypes of the virus are seen throughout country. The disease has a wide spectrum from an asymptomatic stage to DHF and DSS. Annually 100 million cases of dengue and a half million cases of DHF occurs worldwide with a case fatality of 0.5% to 3.5%. The combined laboratory interventions with the clinical spectrum can reduce the mortality in disease.

Malaria is major public health issue and Ballari is an endemic area. Peripheral blood smear examination (PBS) is done routinely. However, PBS during febrile period is essential for demonstration of parasite. In most cases, sample collection during afebrile period or at inappropriate timings results in smear negative reports. Hence, rapid antigen detection tests would be ideal or can be a supportive test to early diagnosis of malaria.

A male Dalmatian aged one year was presented with history of pyrexia, anorexia, lethargy and brownish urination. On clinical examination animal had high body temperature (40.1ºC), pale mucous membranes with petechiae and lymphadenopathy. Routine hematology showed anemia and examination of peripheral blood smear revealed the presence of piroplasms of Babesia gibsoni (+++).

Anaplasma is one of the most rickettsiale diseases in ruminants. Five species including Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma centrale, Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma phagocytophilium and Anaplasma ovis are recognized in ruminant animals. Anaplasma causes major economic losses to the livestock owner. Anaplasma is mainly transmitted by mechanical way such as by biting flies, lice and biological by different tick species and fomites in livestock.

Health care providers lacking proper diagnostic tools are usually unable to determine specific etiologies, often diagnosing patients with acute undifferentiated febrile illness (AUFI) presumptively based on clinical features and assumptions regarding circulating pathogens. Acute fever can be potentially fatal if the etiology is not recognized and treated appropriately. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital, Bengaluru, from July-December 2018. Blood was collected from patients with acute fever for peripheral smear, serological tests.

The present study was aimed to do comparative evaluation of efficacy of various staining techniques and rapid diagnostic tests used for identifying the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, to determine sensitivity and specificity of rapid diagnostic methods and compare the results of rapid diagnostic methods with conventional microscopy. Total of 107 male and female febrile patients of all age, clinically suspected to be positive for malaria, willing to participate and to sign the informed consent form were included in this study.

Thrombocytopenia Thrombocytopenia results from one or more of three processes: (1) decreased bone marrow production; (2) sequestration, usually in an enlarged spleen; and/or (3) increased platelet destruction. Disorders of production may be either inherited or acquired. In evaluating a patient with thrombocytopenia, a key step is to review the peripheral blood smear and to first rule out "pseudothrombocytopenia," particularly in a patient without an apparent cause for the thrombocytopenia. Pseudothrombocytopenia (Fig.

Approach to the Patient: Thrombocytopenia The history and physical examination, results of the CBC, and review of the peripheral blood smear are all critical components in the initial evaluation of the thrombocytopenic patients (Fig. 109-2). The overall health of the patient and whether he/she is receiving drug treatment will influence the differential diagnosis. A healthy young adult with thrombocytopenia will have a much more limited differential diagnosis than an ill hospitalized patient who is receiving multiple medications.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The peripheral white blood cell count is high due to increased numbers of small, well-differentiated, normal-appearing lymphocytes. The leukemia lymphocytes are fragile, and substantial numbers of broken, smudged cells are usually also present on the blood smear. If the primary presentation is lymphadenopathy and a lymph node biopsy is performed, pathologists usually have little difficulty in making the diagnosis of small lymphocytic lymphoma based on morphologic findings and immunophenotype.

Figure 101-6 Peripheral blood smear from a 5-year-old G6PD-deficient boy with acute favism. A very small minority of subjects with G6PD deficiency have CNSHA of variable severity. The patient is always a male, usually with a history of NNJ, who may present with anemia or unexplained jaundice, or because of gallstones later in life. The spleen may be enlarged. The severity of anemia ranges from borderline to transfusion-dependent. The anemia is usually normo-macrocytic, with reticulocytosis. Bilirubin and LDH are increased.

Lymphomas Lymphoma in the small bowel may be primary or secondary. A diagnosis of a primary intestinal lymphoma requires histologic confirmation in a clinical setting in which palpable adenopathy and hepatosplenomegaly are absent and no evidence of lymphoma is seen on chest radiograph, CT scan, or peripheral blood smear or on bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. Symptoms referable to the small bowel are present, usually accompanied by an anatomically discernible lesion.
