The application of pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) close to the dorsal root ganglia, or peripheral nerves, has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain conditions. The goal of this study was to investigate the analgesic effect of immediate PRF treatment after nerve injury and its possible cellular alterations in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in rats with spared nerve injury (SNI).

Neurogenic Myositis Ossificans (NMO) is a rare disabling pathology characterized by peri-articular heterotopic ossifications following severe peripheral or central nervous system injuries. It results in ankylosis and vessels or nerves compressions.

Peripheral nerve injury causes limb muscle/bone atrophy, leading to chronic pain. However, the mechanisms underlying muscle/bone atrophy after peripheral nerve injury remain unknown. It was recently reported that M1 macrophages are the main factors responsible for neurogenic inflammation after peripheral nerve injury.

Unilateral weakness of an upper extremity is most frequently caused by traumatic nerve injury or compression neuropathy. In rare cases, lesion of the central nervous system may result in syndromes suggesting peripheral nerve damage by the initial examination.

Carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication is a leading cause of severe neuropsychological impairments. Peripheral nerve injury has rarely been reported. It consists usually in a demyelinating polyneuropathy or mononeuropathy affecting mainly the lower limbs. Isolated involvement of both upper extremities has been described in only 4 patients related to root damage.

Peripheral nerve injury is known to activate the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) pathway as one of pro-regenerative transcriptional programs, which could stimulate multiple injury-induced gene expression and contribute to axon regeneration and functional recovery.

The effects of chronic neonatal denervation and a crush lesion on the regenerative capacity of sensory nerve fibers were studied in rats. After 50 weeks of postnatal denervation, the amplitudes of compound action potentials (CAPs) of Aαβ-, Aδ- and Cfibers were reduced to 14.3%, 18.2% and 37.4%, respectively (P < 0.005).

Peripheral nerve injury is normally followed by a robust regenerative response. Here we describe the early changes associated with injury from the initial rise in intracellular calcium and the subsequent activation of transcription factors and cytokines leading to an inflammatory reaction, and the expression of growth factors, cytokines, neuropeptides, and other secreted molecules involved in cell-to-cell communication promoting regen-eration and neurite outgrowth.

The brain and spinal cord compose the Central Nervous System (CNS), which is the control center of the body. Inputs from muscles, involuntary organs, and senses travel through the nerves of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) into the CNS where they are interpreted. Signals may travel within the brain to separate functional areas. Instructions are then sent outward again for voluntary movement and involuntary regulation to complete the endless loop of the nervous system circuitry.
