In Karnataka Mandya district is one of the important paddy growing area. Mono cropping, faulty cultivation practices with continuous submerged conditions are causing higher pest and disease incidence and leading to lower yield. In this context KrishiVigyana Kendra, Mandya demonstrated integrated pest and disease management practices in 30 farmer’s field. The objectives of the study were to minimize the use of chemical pesticides and to establish the use of eco-friendly management practices.

The impact of Improved agricultural practice (IAP) with emphasis on soil analysis based organic manure and chemical fertilizer application, replacement of 25% chemical fertilizer with Bio-fertilizers and Integrated Pest Management, was studied for 3 successive years in 5 fields in Ricelentil – Okra cropping system in Gangetic Alluvial zones of West Bengal, India. IAP was seen to have significant beneficial effects on elevating soil organic carbon content and increase soil pH towards normality.

Predators are important links in the food chain and are needed to maintain herbivore population in crop ecosystem in check. However, like other insects, they are also vulnerable to various weather factors, which impedes the natural control that they contribute to the ecosystem. Information on impact of weather factors on predators helps to understand natural control better and also formulate integrated pest management practices.

Plants are not capable of running away from their enemies, i.e., the herbivores that may eat them. However, under certain circumstances, plants can rely on the natural enemies of insect herbivores for protection. These natural enemies include other insects that are predators and parasitoids. Habitat manipulation, which is also referred to as “Ecological Engineering”, focuses on reducing mortality of natural enemies, providing the supplementary resources and manipulating host plant attributes for the benefit of natural bio-agents.

Ecological engineering and ecofriendly pest and disease management strategies in paddy is the need of the hour because of reduction in natural enemies population in rice ecosystem due to indiscriminate use of pesticides. Ecological Engineering and ecofriendly pest and disease management strategies in paddy was demonstrated in the farmers’ field as Front Line Demonstration in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. In the demonstration plot the dead heart symptoms was 3.63% and white ear was 0.86% compared to 13.29% and 2.
