Temperate bacteriophages are capable of lysogenic conversion of new bacterial hosts. This phenomenon is often ascribed to “moron” elements that are acquired horizontally and transcribed independently from the rest of the phage genes.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major obstacle to the treatment of gastric cancer (GC). Using a phage display approach, we previously obtained the peptide GMBP1, which specifically binds to the surface of MDR gastric cancer cells and is subsequently internalized. Furthermore, GMBP1 was shown to have the potential to reverse the MDR phenotype of gastric cancer cells, and GRP78 was identified as the receptor for this peptide

Lymphocyte-activation gene (LAG)3 is a 498 aa transmembrane type I protein acting as an immune inhibitory receptor. It is expressed on activated lymphocytes, natural killer cells and plasmacytoid dendritic cells. In activated lymphocytes, LAG3 expression is involved in negative control of cell activation/proliferation to ensure modulation and control of immune responses.

Type VI secretion systems and tailocins, two bacterial phage tail-like particles, have been reported to foster interbacterial competition. Both nanostructures enable their producer to kill other bacteria competing for the same ecological niche. Previously, type VI secretion systems and particularly R-type tailocins were considered highly specific, attacking a rather small range of competitors. Their specificity is conferred by cell surface receptors of the target bacterium and receptor-binding proteins on tailocin tail fibers and tail fiber-like appendages of T6SS.

To generate human antibodies against CXCR4, a seven-transmembrane chemokine receptor and a principal coreceptor forHIV-1, several roundsofPathfinder andStep-back selection from a large phage display antibody library were performed on Jurkat cells. A mAb against CXCR4 or biotinyated phage antibodies were used as guide molecules. Over 100 pan-Jurkat-cell-positive antibodies were charac-terized, but none were CXCR4 specific.

Macrophage colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) or CSF-1 controls the development of the macrophage lineage through its receptor tyrosine kin-ase, c-Fms. cAMP has been shown to influence proliferation and differenti-ation in many cell types, including macrophages. In addition, modulation of cellular ERK activity often occurs when cAMP levels are raised.

4-Aminobutyrate type A (GABAA) receptor-associated protein (GABA-RAP) is a ubiquitin-like modifier implicated in the intracellular trafficking of GABAAreceptors, and belongs to a family of proteins involved in intra-cellular vesicular transport processes, such as autophagy and intra-Golgi transport.
