  • A new species of the Macrobiotus hufelandi group is described from Poland. An integrative taxonomic approach was applied by combining morphological and morphometric analysis imaging under phase contrast and scanning electron microscopy with molecular analysis (four molecular markers) to unambiguously support the establishment of the new species. The specimens of Macrobiotus hannae sp. nov. are similar to three taxa of the Macrobiotus hufelandi complex: Macrobiotus hufelandi C.A.S. Schultze, 1834; M. punctillus Pilato, Binda & Azzaro, 1990; and M. joannae Pilato & Binda, 1983.

  • In present study, a previously fabricated tripolymer composite scaffold of PCL/gelatin/chitosan was modified with collagen I and the modified scaffold were studied for biocompatibility of L929 mouse fibroblasts and human osteoblast cells. Phase contrast microscopy confirmed the viability of L929 mouse fibroblasts and human osteoblasts cultured with the modified composite scaffold which indicated that scaffold did not produce any toxic effect on both cells.

  • Because of its non-destructive nature, label-free imaging is an important strategy for studying biological processes. However, routine microscopic techniques like phase contrast or DIC suffer from shadow-cast artifacts making automatic segmentation challenging.

  • The present investigation was undertaken for the isolation and characterization of B. thuringiensis strains from different habitats based on the morphology, staining properties and biochemical characters. Fifty four samples including soil samples (30), phylloplane (21), insect cadaver (2) and stored grain dusts (1) were collected from cultivated and barren lands not having Bt history.

  • Isolated microscopic hematuria can be a manifestation of glomerular diseases. The RBCs of glomerular origin are often dysmorphic when examined by phase-contrast microscopy. Irregular shapes of RBCs may also occur due to pH and osmolarity changes produced along the distal nephron. There is, however, significant observer variability in detecting dysmorphic RBCs. The most common etiologies of isolated glomerular hematuria are IgA nephropathy, hereditary nephritis, and thin basement membrane disease. IgA nephropathy and hereditary nephritis can lead to episodic gross hematuria.
