Phoma species

Phomafungin is a recently reported broad spectrum antifungal compound but its biosynthetic pathway is unknown. We combed publicly available Phoma genomes but failed to find any putative biosynthetic gene cluster that could account for its biosynthesis.

Secondary metabolites plays a vital role during plant-fungal interaction, in addition to the synthesis of secondary metabolites, several fungal species also have antifungal effects on other microbes. In the present study secondary metabolites of three different isolates of Rhizopus oryzae were extracted and screened for their antifungal properties against Alternaira, Pythium, Phoma and Rhizoctonia at 500 ppm.

The tomato leaves infected with early blight recorded the highest leaf surface fungal species than non-infected leaves. In total twenty six fungal species (thirteen genera) were isolated from both diseased infected and noninfected leaf surface of tomato from seven districts of Meghalaya, following leaf impression, leaf washing and dilution plating and leaf washing and serial dilution plating methods. Among all the three methods used leaf impression method recovered the highest fungal population followed by serial dilution plating and leaf washing and dilution plating method.

Endophytes are novel sources of natural bioactive compounds. This study seeks endophytes that produce the anticancer enzyme L-asparaginase, to harness their potential for mass production. Four plants with anticancer properties; Cymbopogon citratus, Murraya koenigii, Oldenlandia diffusa and Pereskia bleo, were selected as host plants. L-Asparaginase-producing endophytes were detected by the formation of pink zones on agar, a result of hydrolyzes of asparagine into aspartic acid and ammonia that converts the phenol red dye indicator from yellow (acidic condition) to pink (alkaline condition).

This study reports twelve species of cladoniicolous fungi from Turkey. Nine of these taxa, i.e. Abrothallus cladoniae R.Sant. & D.Hawksw., Epicladonia stenospora (Harm.) D.Hawksw., Lichenosticta alcicornaria (Linds.) D.Hawksw., Lichenoconium aeruginosum Diederich, M.Brand, van den Boom & Lawrey, Phoma foliaceiphila Diederich, Kocourk. & Etayo.
