Photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency

The ratio of CO2 mesophyll conductance (gm) to Ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) content has been suggested to positively affect photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE).

Plants are always exposed to dynamic light. The photosynthetic light use efficiency of leaves is lower in dynamic light than in uniform irradiance. Research on the influence of environmental factors on dynamic photosynthesis is very limited. Nitrogen is critical for plants, especially for photosynthesis.

Nitrogen is the major nutrient element required for the plant growth and development. In rice, development of varieties with improved nitrogen use efficiency will reduce the nitrogen fertilizer application. This study was investigating the genotypic differences in photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency, nitrogen use efficiency, yield and yield related traits of 12 different rice genotypes under two different nitrogen levels viz., T1 and T2. Different physiological and agronomical characters were measured in selected 12 genotypes, growing in field.

A new “Green revolution” is needed in world agriculture to increase crop yields for food and bioenergy, because gains from conventional breeding method are less than world population growth. Efforts to increase crop productivity must also consider global change. Carbon-dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases in atmosphere leads to global warming. Photosynthesis is the single most effective natural regulator of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. It is timely to consider what new opportunities exist in the current “omics” era to engineer increases in photosynthesis.

Mycorrhizas play key roles in important ecosystem processes and functions. To enhance our understanding of the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on important foliar traits of host plants and their response to climate changes, we analysed 6 selected foliar traits among 54 plant species in 129 sampling sites of ascertained mycorrhizal types on the Tibetan Plateau based on their functional groups.

Camellia sinensis L. is one of the most economically important crops in the world today. The leaves of this plant are harvested for tea production on a massive scale through a process that requires a large amount of inorganic nitrogen (N). However, knowledge of how inorganic nitrogen regulates the growth physiology of C. sinensis L. remains limited.
