When it comes to creating dynamic web sites, the open source PHP language is red-hot property: used on more than 20 million web sites today, PHP is now more popular than Microsoft’s ASP.NET technology. PHP is an ideal server-side scripting language that connects HTML-based web pages to a backend database for dynamic content. It allows you to create anything from a simple form-to-email script to a web forum application, a blogging platform, or a content management system.

This book is intended for anyone interested in building mobile web applications using the jQuery Mobile framework. You’ll need at least a basic knowledge of web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and web servers. In addition, a couple of chapters — the API chapter and the Task Tango chapter — assume you have some experience of the jQuery JavaScript library on which jQuery Mobile is built, including jQuery selectors and events. The Task Tango chapter also includes a lot of PHP code, so some knowledge of PHP will be helpful when following through the examples.

FIFTH EDITION Pantone: CMYK: Back in 2001, when I wrote the first edition of this book (it was called Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site with PHP & MySQL back then), readers were astonished to discover that you could create a site full of web pages without having to write a separate HTML file for each page. PHP stood out from the crowd of programming languages, mainly because it was easy enough for almost anyone to learn and free to download and install.

That book is absolutely great. It covers a lot of ground, with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL, not only with the actual development (in your case with PHP and MySQL) but setting up the server software, etc. As far as I'm aware the book teaches you to use only open-source software for the development. Take into account though that Linux-based OSes are much better for development, though Windows is passable.

As Web sites and intranets become larger and more complex, static HTML files hit their limits. In the first part of Web Application Development with PHP the authors explain PHP's advanced syntax like classes, recursive functions and variables. They present software development methodologies and coding conventions which are a must-know for industry quality products as well as to help making develop faster and more productive. This part covers also many standard algorithms for tree-structures, string sorting and searching. ...

As time has progressed, computers have made giant leaps in the area of processing power. This has brought about newer programming languages that are more abstracted from the underlying hardware. Popular programming languages of the modern era include C++, C#, Objective-C, Visual Basic, SQL, HTML with PHP, ActionScript, Perl, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Python, Haskell and dozens more.[11] Although these high-level languages usually incur greater overhead, the increase in speed of modern computers has made the use of these languages much more practical than in the past.

PHP4 is the latest incarnation of PHP – the "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor". It's a programming language for building dynamic, interactive web sites, originally devised by Rasmus Lerdorf way back in 1994. Since then it's been through a great many changes, and has been adopted by web programmers all around the world. So what exactly is it? In technical terms, PHP4 is a cross-platform, HTML-embedded, server-side web scripting language. Let's take a moment to define these term

Hi! Thanks for picking up my book. I sincerely hope that it finds its way to a convenient spot on your desk. Nothing would warm my heart more than to see a beat-down, dogeared, coffee-stained copy of this book right next to your computer. On the other hand, it would drive me nuts if you bought this book only to discover that it didn’t address your needs. In the spirit of customer satisfaction, please read the following introduction to get a sense of where I’m coming from, and whether you might get some good use out of this book....

Working with technology is a funny thing in that every time you think you have it cornered . . . blam! Something pops out of nowhere that leaves you at once both bewildered and excited. Web development seems to be particularly prone to such surprises. For instance, early on, all we had to deal with was plain old HTML, which, aside from the never-ending table-wrangling, was easy enough. But soon, the simple web site began to morph into a complex web application, and accordingly, scripting languages such as PHP became requisite knowledge.

It’s been a while since I first worked on a book with O’Reilly in 1997. That book was a practical guide to data structures and algorithms, a subject that, for the most part, had been defined many years before by some of the early giants of computer science (Dijkstra, Hoare, Knuth, to name a few). By comparison, I’ve been able to witness the rapid evolution of the subject of this book from the front lines, and I have had the good fortune to help refine it myself while working as a web developer at one of the largest web applications in the world, Yahoo!....
