For centuries, sanchi has been used in traditional medicine in East Asian countries to promote health and fitness. To identify and distinguish sanchi from adulterants, this study was conducted to determine the sequence of four DNA barcodes. The PCR products of the four barcodes were 330 bp (rbcL), 822 bp (matK), 484 bp (trnH-psbA), and 438 bp (ITS1).

The Tajima’s test indicated that the analysed population in balancing selection with a D-value of 2.39. A phylogenetic tree based on 455 bp of hypervariable mtDloop sequence classified 17 Bang Troi chicken individuals into three clades A, B, and E, which are common groups of Vietnamese and Asia indigenous chickens. This result provides the first genetic information and maternal lineages of Bang Troi chickens and it can support for registration of local chicken breeds.

With the aim of inferring phylogenetic relationships among 86 species (including 45 species from Vietnam) mostly of the subfamily Convallarioideae (=Nolinoideae) (Asparagaceae sensu APG IV), we analyzed their chloroplast DNA sequences (rbcL and trnL-F) by both Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) methods. Our dataset included six of the seven tribes classified in this subfamily; Convallarieae, Dracaeneae, Liriopeae Nolineae, Polygonateae and Rusceae (Eriospermeae not examined).

The glycogen synthase kinase 3/shaggy kinase (GSK3) is a serine/threonine kinase with important roles in animals. Although GSK3 genes have been studied for more than 30 years, plant GSK genes have been studied only since the last decade.

The auxin response factor (ARF) gene family is involved in plant development and hormone regulation. Although the ARF gene family has been studied in some plant species, its structural features, molecular evolution, and expression profiling in Brachypodium distachyon L. are still not clear.

The difference of the chaetotaxy on three endites of maxillula and the difference of length of posterior tooth of left valve’s hingement were consistent with three phylogenetic groups. The total number of setae of three endites on the maxillula was lowest in the Group A, highest in the Group C, but the length of posterior tooth in hingement of the left valve was largest in the Group A and smallest in the Group C.

Structures of cell wall anionic polymers of the strainStrep-tomycessp. VKMAc-2124, a causative agent of potato scab, which is phylogenetically the closest to plant pathogenic speciesS. setoniiandS. caviscabies, were studied. The strain contains threeanionicglycopolymers, viz., a teichuronicacid with a disaccharide repeatingunitfi6)-a-D-Glcp-(1fi4)-b-D-ManpNAc3NAcA-(1fi,ab-glucosylated polymer of 3-deoxy-D-glycero-D-galacto-non-2-ulopyranosonic acid (Kdn), and ab-glucosylated 1,5-poly(ribitol phosphate). ...

The phylogenetically conserved eukaryotic translation initi-ation factor 5A(eIF5A) is the onlyknown cellular protein to contain thepost-translationallyderivedaminoacidhypusine [N e -(4-amino-2-hydroxybutyl)lysine]. Both eIF5A and its hypusine modification are essential for sustained cell proli-feration. Normally only one eIF5A protein is expressed in human cells. Recently, we identified a second humanEIF5A gene that would encode an isoform (eIF5A-2) of 84% sequence identity.

Acomprehensive, structural and functional, insilicoanalysis of the medium-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (MDR) superfamily, including 583 proteins, was carried out by use of extensive database mining and theBLASTPprogram in an iterative manner to identify all known members of the superfamily. Based on phylogenetic, sequence, and func-tional similarities, the protein members of the MDR super-family were classified into three different taxonomic categories: (a) subfamilies, consisting of a closed group containing a set of ideally orthologous proteins that perform the same function;...

We report the cloning, expression, pharmacological char-acterization and tissue distribution of a melanocortin (MC) receptor gene in a shark, the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanth-ias) (Sac). Phylogenetic analysis showed that this receptor is anorthologof theMC4 subtype, sharing71%overall amino acid identity with the human (Hsa) MC4 receptor. When expressedandcharacterizedbyradioligandbindingassay for the natural MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone) pep-tides a-, b-, and c-MSH, the SacMC4 receptor showed pharmacological properties very similar to the HsaMC4 receptor. ...

Inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) is an important enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of inorganic pyro-phosphate (PPi)intoortho-phosphate (P i ). We report here the molecular cloning and characterization of a gene encoding the soluble PPase of the roundworm Ascaris suum. The predicted A. suumPPase consists of 360 amino acids with a molecular mass of 40.6 kDa and a pI of 7.1.

Phylogenetic evidence is presented that primitively amito-chondriate eukaryotes containing the nucleus, cytoskele-ton, and endomembrane system may have never existed. Instead, the primary host for the mitochondrial progeni-tor may have been a chimeric prokaryote, created by fusion between an archaebacterium and a eubacterium, in which eubacterial energy metabolism (glycolysis and fermentation) was retained.

Coenzyme F420 is a 5-deazaflavin. Upon reduction, 1,5 dihydro-coenzyme F420 is formed with a prochiral centre at C5. All the coenzyme F420-dependent enzymes investigated to date have been shown to be Si-face stereospecific with respect to C5 of the deazaflavin, despite most F420 -dependent enzymes being unrelated phylogenetically. In this study, we report that the recently discovered F420H2 oxidase from methanogenic Archaea is alsoSi-face stereospecific.

Analysis of a draft nuclear genome sequence of the diatomThalassiosira pseudonana revealed the presence of 11 open reading frames showing significant similarity to functionally characterized fatty acid front-end desaturases. The corresponding genes occupy discrete chromosomal loca-tions as determined by comparison with the recently published genome sequence. Phylogenetic analysis showed that two of the T. pseudonana desaturase (Tpdes) sequences grouped with proteobacterial desaturases that lack a fused cytochrome b5 domain. ...

Prion diseases are characterized by the accumulation of a pathogenic mis-folded form of a prion protein (PrP) encoded by the Prnpgene in humans. In the present study in zebrafish, two transcripts and the corresponding genes encoding prion proteins, PrP1 and PrP2, related to human PrP have been characterized with a relatively divergent deduced amino acid sequence, but a well preserved overall organization of structural prion pro-tein motifs.
