Physical measurements by instruments

In this paper we present the development of a multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy instrument capable of sensitively detecting NO2. The instrument collects the sun light scattered by the air molecules and aerosols in the atmosphere and measures the spectrum using a portable spectrometer of high sensitivity.

A detailed account of the performance of the VATLY radio telescope, operated in Ha Noi on and near the 21 cm HI line, is given. Drift scans across the Sun are used to measure the dependence of the gain on frequency and power, revealing small nonlinearities at or below the percent level. Interferences associated with the electromagnetic pollution in the Ha Noi environment are described. The sensitivity of the instrument is discussed and demonstrated with the detection of the Crab.

A real-time and simultaneous processing system with 8 analog inputs is designed. The system is based on the development of Texas Instrument TMS320VC5510 DSK kit. The analog input signals are converted into digital ones by 8 bit ADC module using ADC0809. The ADC module interfaces to the DSP in parallel, through the DSP’s Memory Expansion Connector. The measurement with standard input signals fom FUNCTION GENERATOR LG1311 is also reported.

I have been associated with uncertainty calculations for quite sometime. Asia Metrology Program (APMP) took interest in unification of expressing the measurement results along with uncertainty. In those days the uncertainty components were divided according to source of errors. The errors were named as random and systematic errors. Hence components of uncertainty were named random uncertainty and systematic uncertainty. Around 1980, BIPM took initiative by circulating questioners to the countries who were members of Metre Convention.

Conditioning of Temperature Sensor Output Signals Temperature is a physical variable characterising the flow of heat energy. A temperature measurement process attaches real numbers to the degree of hotness of bodies . Although it can only be measured by suitable sensors the output of these components needs to be presented to the human observer by indicators, recorders or other instruments . To accomplish this further task it is necessary to transform the temperature signal, which is in the thermal energy domain, into another more convenient energy form.
