Physician board certification

The study sought to develop a comprehensive and current description of what Clinical Informatics Subspecialty (CIS) physician diplomates do and what they need to know. Three independent subject matter expert panels drawn from and representative of the 1695 CIS diplomates certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine contributed to the development of a draft CIS delineation of practice (DoP).

Qualifications: Key physician faculty must have current certification in the specialty. Most Review Committees will not approve key physician faculty members who are not ABMS board certified and not eligible for certification. In the rare event that a program has such an individual, the program director should contact the Review Committee executive director for information on whether the Review Committee would consider approval and, if so, what information the Review Committee would need to determine if the individual is acceptable.

State law defines the grounds for misconduct, such as negligence, deceit, fraud, or exploitation of the physician-patient relationship. A physician will face restrictions, suspension, or revocation of his or her license to practice following investigation and conviction of charges filed against him or her. Physicians are required to complete medical school and several years of postgraduate training. They must also pass a rigorous medical licensing examination to be eligible for licensure. The license to practice is broad and not restricted to particular fields of medicine.

Additionally, the medical profession exercises significant self-regulation to assure the continuing competence of practicing physicians. Specialists in reproductive medicine are certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the American Board of Urology after completing residency training and passing examinations. They may achieve subspecialty certification with additional training in infertility and endocrinology.
