Pig management system

Pig farming generates highly polluting wastewaters which entail serious environmental issues when not adequately managed. Microalgae systems can be promising for cost, energy and environment-efficient treatment of piggery wastewater (PWW). Aside from clean water, the produced biomass can be used as biostimulants and biopesticides contributing to a more sustainable agriculture.

Increases in pig farm densities have caused great pressures on waste management systems and produce massive manure and urine quantities in Vietnam. This study aimed to identify the role and contributions of biogas digesters to better manage the sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from pig wastes for different types of pig farms in the north of Vietnam. Four provinces, namely Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho, Thai Binh, and Vinh Phuc, were identified.

The study attempts to investigate the social status and husbandry practices of pig farmers in Jaipur and Alwar district of Rajasthan state, where 10 organized and 20 unorganized farms were selected. Population and production trend of pig husbandry in India and around the world reveled that pig population in India had consistently decreasing trend from 13.29 million (1997) to 10.29 million (2012) whereas world population showing increasing trend from 830.37 million to 969.89 million.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the leading threats in healthcare management system. Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal bacteria commonly seen on skin and nasal passage that can turn as an opportunistic pathogen. The present study was carried out to evaluate the nasal carriage of S. aureus and methicillinresistant S. aureus (MRSA) among apparently healthy companion animals and livestock. A total of 160 nasal swabs were collected from dogs (30), cats (30), cattle (40), goats (30), and pigs (30).

The newest waste management technology is bioconversion using fly larvae converting organic waste to insect larval biomass and organic residue. Bioconversion is a practice of recovering resources while simultaneously limiting the amount of organic material affecting landfill behaviour. Several organisms have been used in this treatment process. Several studies have been done using the black soldier fly larvae to degrade organic material.

The dehesa is both a resilient and a fragile system; its resilience derives from the perseverance of its operators, and its fragility is its susceptibility to unfavourable economic factors that influence its profitability (Siebold, 2009). Livestock grazing is an integral management component of a dehesa and undergirds the conservation function of the system.
