Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong has introduced innovative blended problem-based learning (PBL) with the aid of 3D electronic models (e-models) to Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) curriculum. Statistical results of pre- and post-semester questionnaire surveys illustrated compatibility of e-models in PBL settings. The students’ importance ratings of two objectives “Complete assigned tasks on time” and “Active listener”, and twenty-two facilitator evaluation items including critical thinking and group problemsolving skills had increased significantly.

We planned the first edition of this book on a ‘need to know’ basis, its primary object being to provide students and medical and dental practitioners with the knowledge essential for an informed approach to the prevention and treatment of viral infections. We aimed also at supplying just enough basic virology to underpin the more practical aspects—clinical manifestations, epidemiology, pathogenesis, immune responses, and so forth. And not least, we tried our best to make the text as readable as is possible, given the highly technical nature of some of the material.

Medicine and dentistry are continuously evolving, due largely to the influences and interactions of new methods, technologies, and materials. Partly because of outdated testing requirements, our students can no longer adequately meet the increasing demands these changes have placed on a patient-oriented education.
