Ebook "Green biomass pretreatment for biofuels production" emphasises the tactical mobile and on-farm scales applications that use green pretreatments and processing technologies without the need of on-site waste treatment. Because of the varieties of different biomasses, no single pretreatment is expected to be the universal choice. Some of the pretreatment methods present niche applications are also discussed.

Portulaca granulatostellulata and P. edulisare two subspecies ofcommon purslane. The biomass of both plants was similar; however, with long upright stems and a long vegetative period, P. edulis production was easier. Both subspecies were rich in vitamin C and flavonoids, main organic nutrients’ contents in 25-d-old plants were higher than those in15-d-old plants, and were higher in P. granulatostellulata.

Our society is amidst a technological revolution towards a sustainable economy, focused on the development of biobased products in virtually all sectors. In this context, plant polysaccharides, as the most abundant macromolecules present in biomass represent a fundamental renewable resource for the replacement of fossil-based polymeric materials in commodity and engineering applications.

In addition to its effects on air quality, stubble burning also affects soil fertility (through the destruction of its nutrients), economic development and climate. The crop stubbles (if managed properly) could provide immense economic benefits to the farmers and protect the environment from the severe pollution. Some of the alternative management practices include the incorporation of the stubble into the soil, use of stubble as fuel in power plants, use as raw material for pulp and paper industries, or as biomass for biofuel production.

Engineering of plant rhizosphere with beneficial plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria offers a great promise for sustainable crop productivity. In this context, 49 rhizospheric/endophytic bacterial isolates were purified using N-free medium, screened in vitro for PGP characteristics and evaluated for their beneficial effects on the early growth of maize (Zea mays L.).

Melia azedarach L. is a multipurpose timber tree that is important in forestry plantations. Genetic modification to improve the growth rate and wood quality is important to produce new cultivars of M. azedarach. In this study, the effects of AtGA20ox gene expression on plant growth, wood formation, and biomass production in transgenic M. azedarach plants were investigated. AtGA20ox was inserted into the binary vector pBI101 under the control of the xylem specific promoter CAD4 and transferred to M. azedarach via Agrobacterium-mediated method.

This study intended to focus on the effect of different levels of NaCl (0–400 mM, at regular intervals every 100 mM) on the growth, secondary metabolites, and antioxidant enzyme activities of Polygonum equisetiforme, a wild plant with medicinal and industrial uses, which often grows in harsh environmental conditions. Our results showed that biomass production significantly decreased with salinity, while the leaf relative water content declined only at high levels of NaCl concentration (300–400 mM).

Lead (Pb) is a harmful pollutant that disrupts normal functions from the cell to organ levels. Salix babylonica is characterized by high biomass productivity, high transpiration rates, and species specific Pb. Better understanding the accumulating and transporting Pb capability in shoots and roots of S. babylonica, the toxic effects of Pb and the subcellular distribution of Pb is very important.

Zinc is required for plant growth, as an activator of several enzymes and is directly involved in the biosynthesis of growth regulators such as auxin which promotes production of more plant cells and biomass that will be stored in the plant organs especially in seeds and their deficiencies may be one of the important reasons of poor yields in light textured soils (Singh and Raj, 2001). Keeping this in view a study was conducted on effect of zinc and sulphur on growth and yields of clusterbean.

The species of Azolla (Water fern) are small, delicate, moss- like plants with fragile rhizomes covered by crowded overlapping leaves. They are highly productive plants that double their biomass in 3–10 days. They form an endo symbiotic relationship with the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae, which fixes atmospheric nitrogen, giving the plant access to the essential nutrient.
