Ebook "Defence against bioterrorism: Methods for prevention and control" examines microorganisms and their possible use in forensics, i.e. as possible detection tool that could enable fast and precise detection of possible treats. A number of plant derived components are also discussed as possible agents in bioterrorism attacks, and in relation to infectious disease pathology. Another integral part is food safety, especially in terms of large food supply chains, like airline caterings, institutionalized kitchens etc.

The aim of this work was to understand involvement of PARylation in inducing enzymatic antioxidant defence and alternative electron sinks in response to salinity. For this purpose A. thaliana plants were treated with 3-aminobenzamide (3-AB), which is a PARP inhibitor, in the presence of 100 mM NaCl. The 3-AB treatment induced plant fresh weight under control and salinity conditions. Moreover, 100 mM NaCl + 3-AB treated plants had lower lipid peroxidation when compared to 100 mM NaCl group indicating mitigation of oxidative stress.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential players of plant defence systems because of their involvement in reprogramming gene expression under adverse environmental conditions including drought and heat, which are considered major players in limiting crop productivity. miR172b-3p was previously determined as a remarkable stress-responsive miRNA in our next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis in potato.

The cyclic nucleotide-gated ion channel (CNGC) family affects the uptake of cations, growth, pathogen defence, and thermotolerance in plants. However, the systematic identification, origin and function of this gene family has not been performed in Brassica oleracea, an important vegetable crop and genomic model organism.

The green peach aphid (GPA), Myzus persicae (Sülzer), is a widespread phloem-feeding insect that significantly influences the yield and visual quality of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch]. Single dominant gene (Rm3)-based resistance provides effective management of this invasive pest, although little is known about the molecular responses of plants to GPA feeding.

Phytohormones are key regulators of plant growth, development, and signalling networks involved in responses to diverse biotic and abiotic stresses. Transcriptional reference maps of hormone responses have been reported for several model plant species such as Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa, and Brachypodium distachyon.

Jasmonates play an important role in plant stress and defence responses and are also involved in the regulation of anthocyanin synthesis in response to sucrose availability. Here we explore the signalling interactions between sucrose and jasmonates in response to cold stress in Arabidopsis.

Cowpea is important multipurpose crop which is used for the purpose of food, feed, forage, catch crop, green manuring and cover crop. The crop is prone to rust disease which causes severe yield loss. Hence to manage the disease chemicals which are expensive and hazardous are usually used by the farmers. Alternately a different strategy to manage the same was experimented with the use of elicitors which are compounds which activate chemical defence in plants and this induced defence response in susceptible variety C-152 was examined.

Phenolics are secondary metabolites known as the natural antioxidants. They play significant role in plant defence against the pathogens, therefore used as treatment and to control the pathogenic infections in human also. Turmeric is well-known and valued medicinal plant due to the presence of natural occurring secondary metabolite. The present study aimed to evaluate the total phenolics and curcumin content from the leaves and rhizomes of turmeric germplasms. For this purpose, 30 turmeric germplasm with diverse background were used.

Plants are constantly exposed to stressful situations due to changing environmental conditions or through their contact with numerous pests and pathogenic microorganisms. Plants have evolved various strategies to defend themselves against these stresses. Plant responses to these stresses are complex and involve numerous physiological, molecular, and cellular adaptations.

A study on effect of jasmonate on disease progression as well as induction of defensin gene (PDF1.2) was carry out to explore the effectiveness of Jasmonic acid in triggering defence within the host tissues. The disease severity and expression of PDF1.2 gene was examined after treatment containing Jasmonic acid and pathogen to two ecotypes of Arabidopsis at different time intervals. Methyl jasmonate treatment was found to be effective in decreasing the disease incidence by lowering the disease index in both susceptible (WS) and tolerant ecotype (Col). Transcripts of PDF1.

The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) plays an essential role in the regulation of diverse biological processes throughout the entire lifespan of the plant. SA first emerged as an endogenous signal capable of inducing plant defence responses both at the site of infection and in the systemic tissue of the plant. For more than 200 years, the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) has been studied for its medicinal use in humans.

We all know that Plants are sessile organisms they cannot go and talk like us, but plants continuously interact with each other and share their environment by different ways of communication. One of the important ways of interplant communication is belowground communication through Common Mycorrhizal Network, Plants are so kind they care and share each other, they use Common Mycorrhizal Network for sharing the nutrients and defence signals.
