  • Rice plants are sensitive to the agro-climate conditions, being photoperiod one of main factor contributing to their adaptation to the region where they are grown. Dissecting the genetic bases underlying diversity in rice populations adapted to specific environmental conditions is a fundamental resource for breeding. In this study we have analysed a collection of japonica varieties adapted to temperate regions to perform association studies with traits of high agronomical interest such as heading date, plant height, number of panicles, panicle length and number of grains per panicle.

  • The study revealed that maximum contribution to divergence was made by plant height, seed yield per plant and oil content. Cluster I composed of restorer genotypes which are having higher mean value for volume weight. RHA-91, which was included in cluster III recorded maximum mean value for oil content. Cluster V (CMS109B) showed maximum mean value for oil yield and seed filling per cent. Based on cluster mean values for a given characters, we can select highly divergent genotypes from the respective clusters and can be used in hybridization work.

  • In the present study all the 30 genotypes were grouped into six non overlapping clusters based on non- hierarchical Euclidean cluster analysis. Maximum numbers of genotypes (7) were grouped in cluster-I, IV and VI followed by cluster-II (5), cluster-V (3) and cluster III with one genotype. Inter-cluster distances was highest between cluster IV and VI (916.73) followed by III and V (846.80). Among the 21 characters studied, grain yield plant-1 , stover yield plant-1 , number of kernels per row and ear height contributed maximum towards the total divergence.

  • 40 (forty) yellow seeded genotypes of linseed taken from AICRP on linseed, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) along with one check variety surabhi (yellow seeded check) were evaluated for estimation of seed yield and oil content. The high significant and positive correlation of oil yield per plant with 1000 seed weight suggested that heavy weight seed might have higher oil content. Therefore, selection based on 1000 seed weight could be depending on rich oil yield for the development of varieties.
