Plant NADPH oxidase

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are byproducts of normal plant metabolism and their production is elevated under environmental stresses such as drought, extreme temperature, and salinity. Among these, salinity is a worldwide problem that impacts the fertility of arable lands and sustainability of food security, which is getting more attention due to climate change. Halophytes can survive and reproduce in soils containing high concentrations of salt and have developed adaptation mechanisms at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels including maintenance of ROS metabolism.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by NADPH oxidases known as respiratory burst oxidase homologs (RBOHs) in plants. ROS regulate various cellular processes, including the mutualistic interactions between legumes and nitrogen-fixing bacteria or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Rboh is a multigene family comprising nine members (RbohA–I) in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).

Plant NADPH oxidase (NOX), also known as respiratory burst oxidase homolog (rboh), encoded by the rboh gene, is a key enzyme in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolic network. It catalyzes the formation of the superoxide anion a type of ROS.

Small GTPases are monomeric guanine nucleotide-binding proteins. In plants, ROPs regulate plant cell polarity, plant cell differentiation and development as well as biotic and abiotic stress signaling pathways.

NADPH oxidase (Nox) is a critical enzyme involved in the generation of apoplastic superoxide (O2 − ), a type of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hence regulate a wide range of biological functions in many organisms.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH or G6PD) functions in supply of NADPH, which is required for plant defense responses to stresses. However, whether G6PD functions in the abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway remains to be elucidated.
