The aim of this project was to select highly sensitive and specific aptamer capable of detecting Fusarium graminearum (Fg) and F. pseudograminearum (Fp) species. The aptamer-based testing allows early detection of fungal infection in the field. Fungi are known to change their activity and may often undergo genetic changes. The classic "gene for gene" theory explains the relationship between host plant cultivars and fungal pathogenic races.

Alternative strategies are needed in pest management to protect crops from pests. Occurrence of epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on crop plants, especially on sites that are selected by pests, may be associated with host selection by insects. We carried out laboratory investigations as well as screen house and field experiments to understand whether epiphytic LAB occur at oviposition sites of agricultural and horticultural crops, probably modulating pest abundance by attraction or repulsion. The diversity of such epiphytic LAB associated with insect oviposition sites is discussed.

The signaling properties of the gasotransmitter molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is endogenously generated in plant cells, are mainly observed during persulfidation, a protein post-translational modification (PTM) that affects redox-sensitive cysteine residues. There is growing experimental evidence that H2S in higher plants may function as a mechanism of response to environmental stress conditions.

NAD(P)H:quinone acceptor oxidoreductases are flavoenzymes expressed in the cytoplasm of many tissues and afford protection against the cytotoxic effects of electrophilic quinones by catalyzing a strict two-electron reduc-tion. Such enzymes have been reported from several mammalian sources, e.g. human, mouse and rat, and from plant species.

Substantial levels of trehalose accumulate in bacteria, fungi, and inverte-brates, where it serves as a storage carbohydrate or as a protectant against environmental stresses. In higher plants, trehalose is detected at fairly low levels; therefore, a regulatory or signaling function has been proposed for this molecule.

The project builds on recommendations on delivery of biocontrol options to Vietnam identified by CABI and UNEP (Jenkins and Vos, 2000. Delivery of Biocontrol Technologies to IPM Farmers: Vietnam. UNEP/CABI Critical Issues Case Studies. CAB International/UNEP publication). The activities will consist of a workshop on biopesticide selection and identification, biopesticide production and product quality control, and on application and integration into farming systems.

In recent years Vietnam’s forest coverage has undergone rapid expansion, with a marked increase in plantings of exotic species of Eucalyptus, Acacia and Pinus. This expansion provides excellent opportunities for new international export markets for timber products. However it also represents new and increased risks from forestry pests and diseases, which in outbreak circumstances can have catastrophic consequences on plantation establishment and productivity. These risks come from pest and disease species already established in Vietnam, and exotic species not yet present in the country....

Detailed assessment of impacts of more than 50 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in 11 provinces through which over 2,000 farmers were trained from 2005 to 2006 has shown many beneficial effects. Farmers have increased knowledge and their skills in planting and protecting citrus trees and at the same time they have increase awareness of the recording and post-harvest storage, marketing and especially the changes in farming practices significantly after participating in FFS.

Introduction - Regulatory Aspects All pesticides sold or distributed in the United States (US) must be registered with the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency) for the intended uses and must have safety data to show that they can be used without posing unreasonable risks to humans and the environment. Ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) is classified as an organophosphate pesticide.
