Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the staple cereal crops of the world and it is one of the main sources of carbohydrates for nearly one-half of the world's population. So, an increase in rice yield to satisfy human needs is a pressing requirement. Agronomic characters such as high plant, length of panicle, length of flag leaf, number of seed per panicle, the weight of thousand rice, length and width of rice and tolerance to salt are the deciding factor for yield in rice.

Bồng Nga truật, or Fingerroot, (Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf syn. Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schltr.), also known as Ngải bún, is a common ginger species in Mekong Delta. Its tuber roots and rhizomes are often used to cook rice noodles as an alternative to Tumeric (Curcuma longa L.). Despite being used commonly in Indonesia and Thailand, the plant has not been used and researched as a herb in Vietnam. This research was for starting projects to increase the value of this species.

Hybrid technology in many crops has contributed 20-30 per cent increase in the production and exploitation of heterosis through the development of F1 hybrids which has been recently deployed in rice with yield advantage of 20-25 per cent over best pure lines. The main aim of any plant breeding programme is to develop special high yielding hybrids and success of any plant breeding programme depends on the choice of appropriate genotypes as parents in the hybridization programme.

It is clear that Vietnam is still an agricultural country, in which planting and farming play.an important role in the life of Vietnamese people. Although in recent years, there has been.changes in structure of economy such as the fall in the share of agriculture and the rise of.other sectors, agricultural production also provides jobs for about 60% of Vietnamese.population as well as key export commodities. However, Vietnam is not only famous as the.biggest supplier of rice but also popular with many kinds of fisheries produce like.Pangasius fillets, shrimps, cuttlefish, etc.

Yellow stem borer has been identified as a major insect pest of deepwater rice, causing severe yield losses. Bt gene(s) from Bacillus thuringiensis have been proven very effective in pest resistance program. The use of transgenic plants expressing Bt gene(s) is now occupied effective approach to control insect infestation. We have successfully introduced a synthetic cryIA(b) gene into embryogenic calli of a deepwater indica rice variety, Vaidehi, by using the biolistic method of transformation.

Replication protein A (RPA), a heterotrimeric protein composed of 70, 32 and 14-kDa subunits, has been shown to be essential for DNA replication, repair, recombination, and transcription. Previously, we found that, in two seed plants, rice and Arabidopsis, there are two different types of RPA70-kDa subunit. Substantial biochemical and genetic characterization of these two subunits, termed OsRPA70aand OsRPA70bor AtRPA70a and AtRPA70b, respectively, is described in this report.

Little is known about the functions of DNA polymerasek (Pol k) recently identified in mammals. From the genomic sequence information of rice andArabidopsis, we found that Polkmay be the only member of the X-family in higher plants. We have succeeded in isolating the cDNA and recombinant protein of Polkin a higher plant, rice (Oryza sativaL. cv. Nipponbare) (OsPolk). OsPolkhad activities of DNA polymerase, terminal deoxyribonucleotidyl trans-ferase and deoxyribose phosphate lyase, a marker enzyme for base excision repair. ...

DNA topoisomerase 6 (TOP6) belongs to a novel family of type II DNA topoisomerases present, other than in archaebacteria, only in plants. Here we report the isolation of full-length cDNAs encoding putative TOP6 sub-units A and B from rice (Oryza sativassp.indica), preserving all the struc-tural domains conserved among archaebacterial TOP6 homologs and eukaryotic meiotic recombination factor SPO11.

Substantial levels of trehalose accumulate in bacteria, fungi, and inverte-brates, where it serves as a storage carbohydrate or as a protectant against environmental stresses. In higher plants, trehalose is detected at fairly low levels; therefore, a regulatory or signaling function has been proposed for this molecule.

Auxin influences growth and development in plants by altering gene expression. Many auxin-responsive genes have been characterized in Ara-bidopsisin detail, but not in crop plants. Earlier, we reported the identifi-cation and characterization of the members of the GH3, Aux⁄IAA andSAURgene families in rice.

DNA methylation affects important developmental processes in both plants and animals. The process of methylation of cytosines at C-5 is catalysed by DNA methyltransferases (MTases), which are highly conserved, both struc-turally and functionally, in eukaryotes. In this study, we identified and characterized cytosine DNA MTase genes that are activated with the onset of reproductive development in rice.

TheOryza sativalectin, abbreviated Orysata, is a mannose-specific, jacalin-related lectin expressed in rice plants after exposure to certain stress condi-tions. Expression of a fusion construct containing the rice lectin sequence linked to enhanced green fluorescent protein in Bright Yellow 2 tobacco cells revealed that Orysata is located in the nucleus and the cytoplasm of the plant cell, indicating that it belongs to the class of nucleocytoplasmic jacalin-related lectins.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 ) is known to be a key player in apoptosis in ani-mals. The components and pathways regulating H2O2-induced programmed cell death in plants, however, remain largely unknown. In the present study, rice transgenic lines overexpressing Bcl-2, a human apoptotic sup-pressor, were obtained.

Biofertilisers are defined in this application as microbial inoculants, isolated from soil or the rhizosphere of plants, assisting the mobilisation of soil nutrients such as N and P and others in the plant rhizosphere and thus promoting the growth rate and yield of plants. Successful biofertilisers can contribute to increases in food production in a highly sustainable manner, with economic and environmental advantages.
