Currently, diabetes has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels that are higher than optimal, even if below the diagnostic threshold of diabetes, can also lead to increased morbidity and mortality.

Evaluation of in vivo antidiabetic activity of umbelliferone in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats
The first line of treatment in Diabetes mellitus includes the use of oral hypoglycemic agents which are associated with several side effects. Herbal agents are known for their effectiveness due to their fewer side effects and relatively low cost. Umbelliferone, a coumarin has been reported to reduce or decrease blood glucose, elevated plasma insulin, protein profile, and cause hypolipidemic effect. Six groups of rats were used as control, diabetic control, umbelliferone at 20 mg/kg b.wt., umbelliferone at 40 mg/kg b.wt. and combination of glibenclamide and umbelliferone at 20 mg/kg b. wt.

Gestational Diabetes has been defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with an onset, or first recognition during pregnancy (Beckmann et al., 2005). GDM affects between 2% to 5% of pregnant women. Increasing levels of plasma glucose are associated with birth weight above the 90th percentile, and primary caesarean deliveries and neonatal hyperglycemia. Risk factors for GDM include a history of macrosomia, strong family history of diabetes, and obesity.

The study was conducted to determine the effect of dietary supplemental tryptophan on the levels of blood biochemical parameters namely glucose, total cholesterol, total protein, albumin and globulin. A total of 350 White Leghorn layers of 18 weeks were allocated to seven experimental groups, each of which included 5 replicates and reared upto 45 weeks of age. Experimental diets consisted of two protein diets along with 5 supplemental levels of tryptophan.

High levels of blood glucose are thought to be associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) and hyperinsulinemia, an interstage in the development of CRC. The purpose of this study was to examine associations between incident CRC and blood glucose; plasma insulin; and the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA2-IR), respectively, and to determine whether these associations were dependent on sex and cancer site.

Diabetes is a common metabolic disorder characterized by abnormally increased plasma glucose levels. Postprandial hyperglycemia plays an essential role in development of type 2 diabetes. Inhibitors of carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes such as α-amylase retard the liberation of glucose from dietary complex carbohydrates and delay the absorption of glucose. The purpose of the study was to isolate and select α-amylase inhibitor-producing endophytic fungi from wellknown medicinal plants used in the treatment for diabetes and inhabiting in Uzbekistan.

Diabetes is related with increased cancer mortality across multiple cancer types. Its role in lung cancer mortality is still unclear. We aim to determine the prognostic value of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and diabetes mellitus in patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy.

The present study was conducted to elucidate the plasma mineral profile and serum biochemical parameters in Holstein Friesian cross bred cattle in different physiological stages and seasons. In each season and each physiological group 8 normal healthy animals randomly selected for blood sampling once in a month for minerals Ca, P, Cu, Zn and Mn; biochemical parameters glucose, BUN, and NEFA analysis.

Present study estimated alteration of certain plasma metabolites (glucose, urea nitrogen, cholesterol, NEFA and NEFA: cholesterol ratio) and minerals (Ca, P, Zn, Cu and Mn) in healthy calves (n=96), calf with diarrhoea (n=32) and calf with pneumonia (n=32). Plasma glucose was significantly lower both in calves with diarrhoea and pneumonia as compared to health calves (P0.05).

The study was undertaken to determine and compare the biochemical profile and its correlation with milk production in cattle. The study was done on each of six Gir, Kankrej and Crossbred cattle. The animals were divided in to three groups viz. 0-90 days of lactation (Group I), 91-180 days of lactation (Group II) and 181 till dry stage (Group III). Blood was collected aseptically before and after milking. The plasma biochemical estimations were carried out on BS - 120 Chemistry Analyser (Mindray) using the diagnostic kits.

Plasma-free amino acid profiles have been reported to correlate with obesity and glucose metabolism, and have been studied as potentially useful biomarkers of lifestyle-related diseases affecting metabolism in adulthood. However, knowledge of these relationships is lacking in children, despite the growing public health problem posed by childhood obesity.

The major purpose of our study is to evaluate the impact of cinnamon on long term prediabetic induced renal alterations caused by intraperitonial induction of neonatal streptozotocin (nSTZ). Two-day old male Sprague Dawley (SD) rat pups (n=30) received a single intra peritoneal injection of STZ (90 mg/kg bw) dissolved in 0.1M citrate buffer, pH 4.5 while Control pups (n=8) received the vehicle alone. All rats were maintained on an AIN-93G/M diet in individual cages and a subset of pre-diabetic animals received 3% cinnamon in the AIN-93 diet.

The current study evaluated the antihyperglycemic and hypolipidaemic effects of methanolic extract of Viscum schimperi Engl. whole parts in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The antihyperglycemic activity was evaluated by measuring the fasting blood glucose level (BGL) and by applying the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in diabetic rats. In addition, the effect of the extract on blood plasma insulin was measured as well as its effect on tissue glycogen contents in muscle and liver.

The role of amino acids in diabetes mellitus and its metabolic traits have been suggested previously; however, studied to a very limited scale in the Saudi patient population. Patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were included in the current clinical study. Sample was representative and in accordance with the national population distribution. Blood samples were drawn and assayed for glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein and low density lipoprotein.
