In this study, specific biosensors were used to detect PtdIns(4,5)P2, PtdIns(3,4,5)P3, and FAs proteins conjugated to RFP/GFP in order to monitor changes of PtdIns(4,5)P2 and PtdIns(3,4,5)P3 levels within FAs. We demonstrated that the localisation of PtdIns(4,5)P2 and PtdIns(3,4,5)P3 were moderately correlated with that of FA proteins. Furthermore, we demonstrate that local levels of PtdIns(4,5) P2 increased within FA assembly and declined within FA disassembly. However, PtdIns(3,4,5)P3 levels remained constant within FAs assembly and disassembly.

Members of the Early Salt Induced 3 (Esi3/RCI2/PMP3) gene family in plants have been shown to be induced in response to both biotic and abiotic stresses and to enhance stress tolerance in both transgenic plants and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The protein-modifying agent arsenite stimulates glucose uptake in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In the current study we have analysed the signalling pathways that contribute to this response. By subcellular fractionation we observed that arsenite, like insulin, induces translocation of the GLUT1 and GLUT4 glucose transporters from the low-density membrane fraction to the plasma membrane. Arsenite did not activate early steps of the insulin receptor (IR)-signalling pathway and the response was insensitive to inhibition of phosphatidylinositol-3¢-kinase (PI-3¢)kinaseby wortman-nin. ...

Gas1p is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored plasma membrane glycoprotein ofSaccharomyces cerevisiaeand is a representative of Family GH72 of glycosidases/transgly-cosidases, which also includes proteins from human fungal pathogens. Gas1p, Phr1-2p from Candida albicansand Gel1p fromAspergillus fumigatushave been shown to be b-(1,3)-glucanosyltransferases required for proper cell wall assembly andmorphogenesis. Gas1p is organized into three modules: a catalytic domain; a cys-richdomain; andahighly O-glycosylated serine-rich region. ...

The concentrations of two structurally distinct membrane fluidizers, the local anesthetic benzyl alcohol (BA) and heptanol (HE), were used at con-centrations so that their addition to K562 cells caused identical increases in the level of plasma membrane fluidity as tested by 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexa-triene (DPH) anisotropy.

Cytochromesb561 are a family of transmembrane proteins found in most eukaryotic cells. Three evolutionarily closely related mammalian cyto-chromes b561 (chromaffin granule cytochrome b, duodenal cytochrome b, and lysosomal cytochromeb) were expressed in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae Dfre1Dfre2 mutant, which lacks almost all of its plasma membrane ferrire-ductase activity, to study their ability to reduce ferric iron (Fe 3+ ).

A hydrophilic cation-binding protein, PCaP1, was found to be stably bound to the plasma membrane inArabidopsis thaliana. PCaP1 was quanti-fied to account for 0.03–0.08% of the crude membrane fractions from roots and shoots.

The copines are a family of C2- and von Willebrand factor A-domain-con-taining proteins that have been proposed to respond to increases in intra-cellular calcium by translocating to the plasma membrane. The copines have been reported to interact with a range of cell signalling and cytoskele-tal proteins, which may therefore be targeted to the membrane following increases in cellular calcium.

The caveolin gene family has three members in vertebrates: caveolin-1, caveolin-2, and caveolin-3. So far, most caveolin-related research has been conducted in mammals, but the proteins have also been found in other animals, including Xenopus laevis, Fugu rubripes, and Caenorhabditis elegans. Caveolins can serve as protein markers of caveolae (‘little caves’), invaginations in the plasma membrane 50-100 nanometers in
