Plasmid mediated AmpC- β lactamases

The aim of this study is to evaluate and comparing routinely phenotypic methods in detection of resistance with molecular methods. From this study, it can be concluded that cephamycin-Hodge test is the most sensitive, specific, interpretable and efficient test for detection of AmpC β-lactamases in clinical isolates of Proteus mirabilis, compared to the molecular method.

The incidence of AmpC beta-lactamase producing K. pneumoniae has been steadily increasing over past years and is of significant concern as they restrict therapeutic options and cause treatment failure. The objective of the present study was to know the occurrence of AmpC beta-lactamase producing K. pneumoniae and to create a baseline antibiotic resistance data to implement effective antibiotic policy.

Extended spectrum β-lactamases are often plasmid mediated and derived from mutations in bla-TEM, bla-SHV, bla-CTX-M, and bla-AmpC genes by one or more amino acid substitution around the active site. These genes are responsible for resistance to beta lactams in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa were isolated from wound and burn infection patients admitted to Diwanyia Teaching Hospital.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an important nosocomial infection in mechanically ventilated patients at intensive care unit (ICU). The administration of accurate and timely initial empirical antibiotic therapy is essential to reduce the morbidity and mortality from Ventilator-associated pneumonia. Initial empiric antimicrobial therapy for VAP greatly depends on the type of causative pathogen and its resistance pattern. During the six months study period, 196 patients received mechanical ventilation.
