Ebook "Grapes and health" offers a thorough review of the scientific research that links the consumption of grapes to better health. The book starts with a basic review of grape biology, including the key families of phytochemicals found in grapes, and where they are found. An overview of the rationale for and subsequent creation of a standardized grape powder for use in basic and clinical research provides insight and understanding regarding its widespread use in grape-specific research today.

Cancer patients have an increased risk of developing venous thromboembolism, with up to 30% dying within a month of their development. Some cancer cells are known to induce platelet aggregation, and this interaction is understood to contribute to thrombosis and haematogenous metastasis.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous iloprost in the treatment of Raynaud’s phenomenon and digital ulcers in patients with SSc (systemic scleroderma). Methods: 31 patients with SSc were treated with intravenous iloprost in NHDV from April, 2017 to March, 2020. Evaluation was done after 2 weeks and included: width of ulcer, depth of ulcer, Raynaud phenomenon, laboratory tests, drug side effects.

We have previously shown that platelet aggregation has higher heritability in African Americans than European Americans. However, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of platelet aggregation in African Americans has not been reported.

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is characterized by vegetations on cardiac valves consisting of fibrin and platelet aggregates that are devoid of inflammation or bacteria. Diagnosis is often challenging and is aided by a high index of suspicion.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as sunitinib, are used for cancer treatment, but may also affect platelet count and function with possible hemostatic consequences. Here, we investigated whether patient treatment with the TKI sunitinib affected quantitative and qualitative platelet traits as a function of the sunitinib level and the occurrence of bleeding.

Platelets undergo structural, biochemical and functional alterations when stored, and platelet storage lesions reduce platelet function and half-life after transfusion. The objective of this study was to evaluate stored canine platelet concentrates with platelet aggregation, flow cytometry and biochemistry assays.

Platelet-cancer cell interactions play a key role in successful haematogenous metastasis. Disseminated malignancy is the leading cause of death among ovarian cancer patients. It is unknown why different ovarian cancers have different metastatic phenotypes.

Ticks are economically devastating arthropod ectoparasites of livestock that exclusively feed on host blood. Ticks saliva is a crucial weapon against host-defense systems. Several small fragmented attempts are made by researchers to characterize these biomolecules. Being extremely small in size and quantity, numerous such molecules escape the deep insight of biochemists employing routine gel electrophoresis followed by Coomasie brilliant blue (CBB) staining.

Nefopam is a centrally-acting non-opioid analgesic, which has no effect on bleeding time and platelet aggregation. There has been no study about nefopam and oxycodone combination for postoperative analgesia. In this study, we present efficacy and side effects of nefopam/oxycodone compared with ketorolac/oxycodone in patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) after gynecologic surgery.

Recently, a new protein containing a disintegrin domain, alternagin-C (Alt-C), was purified fromBothrops alternatus venom. Unlike other disintegrins, in Alt-C an ECD amino acid motif takes the place of the RGD sequence. Most dis-integrins contain an RGD/KGD sequence and are very potent inhibitors of platelet aggregation, as well as other cell interactions with the extracellular matrix, including tumor cell metastasis and angiogenesis. The present study investi-gated the effects of Alt-C on human neutrophil chemotaxis in vitro and the activation of integrin-mediated pathways....

To facilitate feeding, certain hematophagous invertebrates possess inhibi-tors of collagen-induced platelet aggregation in their saliva. However, their mechanisms of action have not been fully elucidated. Here, we describe two major salivary proteins, triplatin-1 and -2, from the assassin bug, Tria-toma infestans, which inhibited platelet aggregation induced by collagen but not by other agents including ADP, arachidonic acid, U46619 and thrombin.

Aegyptin is a 30 kDa mosquito salivary gland protein that binds to collagen and inhibits platelet aggregation. We have studied the biophysical properties of aegyptin and its mechanism of action. Light-scattering plot showed that aegyptin has an elongated monomeric form, which explains the apparent molecular mass of 110 kDa estimated by gel-filtration chromatography.
