  • The lipids found in biological systems are either hydrophobic (containing only nonpolar groups) or amphipathic (possessing both polar and nonpolar groups). The hydrophobic nature of lipid molecules allows membranes to act as effective barriers to more polar molecules. In this chapter, we discuss the chemical and physical properties of the various classes of lipid molecules. The following chapter considers membranes, whose properties depend intimately on their lipid constituents.

  • Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) functions as a homodimer. In cell extracts, iNOS molecules partition both in cytosolic and particulate frac-tions, indicating that iNOS exists as soluble and membrane associated forms. In this study, iNOS features were investigated in human intestinal epithelial cells stimulated with cytokines and in duodenum from mice exposed to flagellin. Our experiments indicate that iNOS is mainly associ-ated with the particulate fraction of cell extracts.

  • This paper aimed to screen potential antiproliferative small molecules from 12 small molecules (the derivatives of bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids tetrandrine and fangchinoline) by targeting BLM642–1290 helicase. Then we explore the inhibitory mechanism of those small molecules on proliferation of MDA-MB-435 breast cancer cells.

  • The tumor microenvironment plays a determinative role in stimulating tumor progression and metastasis. Notably, tumor-stroma signals affect the pattern of infiltrated immune cells and the profile of tumor-released cytokines. Among the known molecules that are engaged in stimulating the metastatic spread of tumor cells is the S100A4 protein.

  • Gas chromatography – chromatography using a gas as the mobile phase and a solid/liquid as a stationary phase – In GC, the analytes migrate in the gas phase, so their boiling point plays a role – GC is generally applicable to compounds with masses up to about 500 Da and with ~60 torr vapor pressure at room temp (polar functional groups are trouble) Supercritical fluid chromatography – chromatography using a supercritical fluid as the mobile phase and a solid/liquid as a stationary phase – In SFC, the analytes are solvated in the supercritical fluid – SFC is applicable to a much wider range ...

  • I started my first photobiological research project almost exactly 50 years ago, in the spring of 1957. My scientific interest ever since has been focused on photobiology in its many aspects. Because I have been employed as a botanist, my own research has dealt with the photobiology of plants, but throughout this time I have been interested in other aspects, such as vision, the photobiology of skin, and bioluminescence. A first edition of the present book was published in 2002, but this second edition is much expanded and completely updated.

  • Chirality is a phenomenon that is manifested throughout the natural world, ranging from fundamental particles through the realm of molecules and biological organisms to spiral galaxies. Thus, chirality is of interest to physicists, chemists, biologists, and astronomers. Chiroptical spectroscopy utilizes the differential response of chiral objects to circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation. Applications of chiroptical spectroscopy are widespread in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and physics. It is indispensable for stereochemical elucidation of organic and inorganic molecules.

  • The protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) family of enzymes cata-lyzes the transfer of methyl groups from S-adenosylmethionine to the gua-nidino nitrogen atom of peptidylarginine to form monomethylarginine or dimethylarginine. We created several less polar analogs of the specific PRMT inhibitor arginine methylation inhibitor-1, and one such compound was found to have improved PRMT inhibitory activity over the parent molecule.
