  • Work experience is a key factor in hiring decision of managers. However, empirical evidence that early life experience matters is very limited. This thesis fills in the gap by examining how work experience affects managerial performance and managerial style in mutual funds. Using a sample of Chinese fund managers, we find performances and styles vary across managers of different career backgrounds. Notably, managers of research and especially government backgrounds show higher risk adjusted returns while taking on less systematic risk.

  • This paper examines how the secretary of the prefecture-level municipal party committee affects land supply in Chinese cities. We found that the traditional urban economics framework also applies to China. Specifically, population and gross domestic product (GDP) are highly correlated with land supply. On this basis, we found that the secretary of the municipal party committee, who has worked at the provincial government level, significantly affects the land supply at the municipal level.

  • This paper takes Chinese private listed companies as a sample to study the impact of political connections on financial constraints and long-term growth. The study found that political connections can help companies ease financial constraints and help companies to enlarge scale. However, the easing of financial constraints has not helped companies to improve their innovation capabilities and operating efficiency.
