Pollen tube

As in animals, cell–cell communication plays a pivotal role in male–female recognition during plant sexual reproduction. Prelaid peptides secreted from the female reproductive tissues guide pollen tubes towards ovules for fertilization. However, the elaborate mechanisms for this dialogue have remained elusive, particularly from the male perspective.

The paper presents the morphology of the flower of Iris aphylla L., which is a protected species in many European countries. The study comprises phenological observations of flowering and assessment of nectar and pollen production, and flowering and fruiting abundance. Additionally, the number of insect visitors on the flowers was monitored. The investigations of specimens originating from 4 populations in central-eastern Poland (Wyżyna Lubelska Upland) were conducted in the Botanical Garden of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.

Transcriptomic analysis between self- and cross-pollinated pistils of tea plants (Camellia sinensis)
Self-incompatibility (SI) is a major barrier that obstructs the breeding process in most horticultural plants including tea plants (Camellia sinensis). The aim of this study was to elucidate the molecular mechanism of SI in tea plants through a high throughput transcriptome analysis.

Expansins (EXPs) facilitate non-enzymatic cell wall loosening during several phases of plant growth and development including fruit growth, internode expansion, pollen tube growth, leaf and root development, and during abiotic stress responses.

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) addition is one of the several post-translational modifications to proteins that increase their affinity for membranes. In eukaryotes, the GPI transamidase complex (GPI-T) catalyzes the attachment of pre-assembled GPI anchors to GPI-anchored proteins (GAPs) through a transamidation reaction.

Sexual reproduction in plant is more sensitive to low B, than vegetative growth. Boron needed for growth of the pollen tube during flower pollination and therefore important for good seed set and fruit development. Boron is thought to increase nectar production by flowers, and this attracts pollinating insects. B in crop production is one of the essential micronutrient required for normal growth of most of the crops.

The pollen grains of raspberry exhibited the average size (length x width) of 177.73 x 124.43µ in glycerol conditions, followed by (173.29 x 173.29 µ) in water suspension. The viability of fresh pollen grains ranged from 32.50 % to 97.70 % in hermaphrodite or bisexual flowers. 25 % sucrose solution + 0.4 % boric acid solution showed the highest pollen germination of 36.66% with the maximum pollen tube length (284.37µ) after 48 hours interval.

The pollen tube growth in wide crosses involving Arachis hypogeae (var VRI 2, TMV 7 and TMV 13) and wild Arachis sp. (Arachis stenosperma, Arachis cruziana and Arachis kempmercadoi) have been interpreted among nine crosses. The wide crosses were monitored for pollen attrition and pollen proliferation, being construed that greater levels of genetic distance trigger larger quantum of physiological and physical alterations at various levels of pistil growth. Pollen germination administered greater effect among wide crosses battling poor penetration of pollen tube in the transmitting tissue.

Interspecific hybridization is a useful tool in ornamental breeding to increase genetic variability and introduce new valuable traits into existing cultivars. The successful formation of interspecific hybrids is frequently limited by the presence of pre- and post-fertilization barriers.

Current views on the control of cell development are anchored on the notion that phenotypes are defined by networks of transcriptional activity. The large amounts of information brought about by transcriptomics should allow the definition of these networks through the analysis of cell-specific transcriptional signatures.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) self-compatibility (SC) is defined as self-pollen tubes that can penetrate their own stigma, elongate in the style and fertilize their own ovules. Self-incompatibility (SI) is defined as self-pollen tubes that are prevented from developing in the style.

Pectins are a group of structurally complex plant cell wall polysaccharides whose biosynthesis and function remain poorly understood. The pectic polysaccharide rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) has two types of arabinogalactan side chains, type-I and type-II arabinogalactans. To date few enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of pectin have been described.

During sexual reproduction, pollen grains land on the stigma, rehydrate and produce pollen tubes that grow through the female transmitting-tract tissue allowing the delivery of the two sperm cells to the ovule and the production of healthy seeds.

The objective of this work was to study the reproductive biology in four nerium cultivars. Anthesis, anther dehiscence, stigma receptivity, flower and fruit morphology, pollen morphology and production, ovule production and pollen ovule ratio were studied. Anthesis in nerium cultivars started from 5.30 a.m. and reached the peak by 6.30 a.m. except in yellow cultivar (6.30 to 7.30 am). Nerium flowers are protandrous in nature and the anthers dehisced by longitudinal slit just before the anthesis. Anther dehiscence started at 5.30 a.m. and maximum anther dehisce was observed between 5.

The morphological characteristics, fertility and in vitro germination of natural tetraploid red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) pollen were examined as well as the characteristics of pollen tubes and callose formation. Pollen grains of red clover are tricolporate and usually the germination of pollen is monosphonic.
