Pollination techniques

Five different emasculation methods viz. standard technique for wheat x maize crosses, early pollinations on non-emasculated spikes, clipped glume facilitated emasculation, plastic bag emasculation and hot water emasculation were compared. Clipped glume facilitated emasculation resulted in lowest caryopses formation frequency. Early pollination on non-emasculated spikes gave reasonably high embryo formation frequency while omitting tedious emasculation steps.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops under solanaceous group which can be grown both under open field conditions and greenhouses. Tomato has achieved high popularity especially in the recent years because of lycopene’s anti-oxidative activities and anti-cancerous functions. The cultivated tomato has been used in genetic studies because of the ease with which it can be easily manipulated and also its diversity present within the population.

Berseem, a nitrogen-fixing, annual, multicut forage crop cultivated around 2 million hectares areas of northern, central and eastern parts of India. Berseem has variability for pollination behavior however variation for morphological and agronomic traits are scare, perhaps, because of initially introduction of crop with narrow genetic base. Genetic variability have been fortified through introduction of exotic materials, intra-interspecific hybridization, induction of polyploidy and mutation. ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute maintain >900 accessions of Trifolium spp.

Fourteen genotypes and 3 different gamma ray doses were tested to develop an efficient haploidization protocol in squash. For this purpose, male flowers collected 1 day before anthesis were irradiated with 150, 200, and 300 Gy gamma ray doses, and female flowers were pollinated with the irradiated pollens the next day.

The present study was designed to transfer mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) resistance in urdbean from ricebean. Four MYMV-resistant ricebean genotypes (RBL1, RBL6, RBL35, and RBL50) were hybridized as males with the MYMV-susceptible urdbean line PS 1 using hand emasculation and pollination techniques under field conditions.
