  • Ebook "Crystallization of nanoscaled colloids" deals with the processes that create ordered assemblies from disordered nanoparticles. Ordered packings of nanoscale particles can exhibit unusual properties. This work investigates the self-assembly of such particles, a process widely employed for the generation of ordered structures, but not yet well understood. In situ methods are used to observe the assembly of sub-micron polymer lattices and sub-10 nm gold particles into crystalline monolayers and aggregates.

  • Binder jetting is an additive manufacturing technique in which powdered material is sequentially laid down and printed on by an ink binder, in a selective manner, to form a 3D object. Unfortunately work in this area relevant to food materials is largely unpublished, however a typical application of this technique is sugar powder bound by a water and alcohol based ink with optional colour or flavour demonstrated by commercial ventures.

  • Viscosity is an important rheological property, which may have impact on the glycemic response of starchy foods. However, the relationship between starch gels viscosity on its hydrolysis has not been elucidated. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of gels viscosity on the microstructure, and the kinetics of enzymatic hydrolysis of starch.

  • Many materials used in a wide range of fields consist of polymers that feature great structural complexity. One particularly suitable technique for characterising these complex polymers, that often feature correlated distributions in e.g. microstructure, chemical composition, or molecular weight, is comprehensive two-dimensional liquid chromatography (LC × LC).

  • Citrus waste includes peels, pulp and membrane residue and seeds, constituting approximately 40–60% of the whole fruit. This amount exceeds ~110–120 million tons annually worldwide. Recent investigations have been focused on developing newer techniques to explore various applications of the chemicals obtained from the citrus wastes. The organic acids obtained from citrus waste can be utilized in developing biodegradable polymers and functional materials for food processing, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

  • A combination of gel-casting and polymeric foam infiltration methods is used in this study to prepare porous bodies of hydroxyapatite (HA), to provide a better control over the microstructures of samples. These scaffolds were prepared by impregnating a body of porous polyurethane foam with slurry containing HA powder, and using a percentage of solids between 40% and 50% w/v, and three different types of monomers to provide a better performance.

  • The influence of polymer-modified mortar with fly ash was researched, when lignin cellulose and calcium sulphoaluminate expansive agent was added into mortar. The consistency, mechanical properties and shrinkage performance of mortar were studied by orthogonal experiment. Lignin cellulose was wrapped by the hydration products of binding materials. As the expansive agent and fly ash increasing, the consistency of mortar can be improved.

  • The decrease in strength of tile adhesive mortars during wet storage was investigated. In a first approach, the water resistance of the polymer phases was tested on structures isolated from the mortar and in situ. It was observed that cellulose ether and polyvinyl alcohol structures are water-soluble. Subsequent investigations on polymer mobility within the mortar showed that the migrating pore water transports cellulose ether and polyvinyl alcohol during periods of water intrusion and drying. This leads to enrichments at the mortar – substrate interface.

  • Learning involves acquiring knowledge, which is encouraged in all traditions. For example, the Quran urges people to seek knowledge and to use it for the well being of society: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge”, Al-Quran 20:114. Knowledge should be applied in a safe, responsible and ethical manner not only to benefi t us personally but also to improve the lot of the people we live with. It is also a duty to ensure that our surrounding habitat is not endangered. Th is sometimes requires knowledge of the local culture to help achieve a desirable outcome.

  • Most manufacturing technologies for metallic microstructures have their roots either in semiconductor (inmost cases, silicon) device production or in conventional precision machining. Of these, the techniques that are well known have been used formicrostructure dimensions. Further, they have been adapted and improved to reach the desired precision and surface quality. In some rare cases, itwas possible to use the same manufacturing process for macroscale and microscale devices and to get the desired results.

Themanufacturing processes of bothmetalmicrostructure components and ceramic microstructure devices will also be described setting the focus on some well- established technologies. The detailed description of all these techniques can, however, be found in Refs [1–5]. A very short bonding section in which the most common bonding and sealing techniques are briefly described will complete the description of metals and ceramics [4,6].

  • Polymer micromolding is a common way to ma microchannels, because of the ease of processing, low co and bio-compatibility. Molds with micron-scale featur may be made from photosensitive polymers (e.g., SU-8) by DRIE silicon micromachining. Poly(dimethylsiloxan (PDMS) is often chosen as the microstructural materi [15]. PDMS is spin cast onto the mold, cured and peel off. A short exposure in an oxygen plasma activates t PDMS surface and results in instant bonding to oth PDMS or glass surfaces.
