Community acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has been recognised as one of the important pathogen in head and neck infections. These infections include tonsillitis, thyroiditis, sinusitis, periorbital cellulitis, otitis, retropharyngeal abscess, cervical lymphadenitis and wounds of the neck. This review illustrates the growing prevalence of CA-MRSA, and the current therapeutic approaches to head and neck infections caused by this bacterium.

Microbiology S. aureus is a pathogen in more than half of cases of contiguous-focus osteomyelitis. However, in contrast to hematogenous osteomyelitis, these infections are often polymicrobial and are more likely to involve gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria. Hence a mixture of staphylococci, streptococci, enteric organisms, and anaerobic bacteria may be isolated from a diabetic foot infection or pelvic osteomyelitis underlying a decubitus ulcer.

Brain Abscess (See also Chap. 376) Brain abscess often occurs without systemic signs. Almost half of patients are afebrile, and presentations are more consistent with a space-occupying lesion in the brain; 70% of patients have headache, 50% have focal neurologic signs, and 25% have papilledema. Abscesses can present as single or multiple lesions resulting from contiguous foci or hematogenous infection, such as endocarditis. The infection progresses over several days from cerebritis to an abscess with a mature capsule.
