The effects of pH, ionic strength and polymer ratio in the complexation of chitosan (CHI) with different anionic polysaccharides, namely gum Arabic (GA), sodium alginate (ALG) and κ-carrageenan (CRG), were investigated. This was made using titration techniques, which allowed the determination of stoichiometry and binding constant of complexes.

A polysaccharide-enriched extract obtained from Lentinula edodes was submitted to several purification steps to separate three different D-glucans with β-(1→6), β-(1→3),(1→6) and α-(1→3) linkages, being characterized through GC–MS, FT-IR, NMR, SEC and colorimetric/fluorimetric determinations.

In this work, simulations of xylan oligomers starting from random configurations at different levels of hydration are performed. The simulations show clear evidence of phase separation into water-rich and polymer-rich phases at higher hydration, in spite of standard indicators of equilibrium, such as density and energy, remaining constant.

High-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) and subcritical fluid chromatographic (SFC) separations of the enantiomers of structurally diverse, basic ß-carboline, tetrahydroisoquinoline and benzazepine analogues of pharmacological interest were performed applying chiral stationary phases (CSPs) based on (i) neutral polysaccharides- and (ii) zwitterionic sulfonic acid derivatives of Cinchona alkaloids.

The enantioselective separation of newly prepared, pharmacologically significant isopulegol-based ßamino lactones and ß-amino amides has been studied by carrying out high-performance liquid chromatography on diverse amylose and cellulose tris-(phenylcarbamate)-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs).

Research on oligosaccharides, including the complicated product mixtures generated by lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), is growing at a rapid pace. LPMOs are gaining major interest, and the ability to efficiently and accurately separate and quantify their native and oxidized products chromatographically is essential in furthering our understanding of these oxidative enzymes.

The enantioseparation of four oxazolidinone and one biosimilar thiazolidine derivatives was performed on seven different polysaccharide-type chiral stationary phases (Lux Amylose-1, Lux i-Amylose-1, Lux Amylose-2, Lux Cellulose-1, Lux Cellulose-2, Lux Cellulose-3, Lux Cellulose-4) differing in backbone (cellulose or amylose), substituent or the immobilization technologies (coated or immobilized).

In this study, phase separation of colloidal whey protein isolate (WPI) particle dispersions was studied using a rod-like polysaccharide xanthan. Effects of different xanthan concentration, particle volume fraction, and temperature were analyzed by visual observations, turbidity measurements, and particle mobility tracking method. Particle mobility was determined using a diffusing wave spectroscopy (DWS) set up. Xanthan concentration was kept low in order not to increase the viscosity of dispersions, so that the phase separation could be observed easily.

Bacteroides vulgatus has been shown to be involved in the aggravation of colitis. Previously, we separated two potent virulence factors, capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), from a clinical isolate of B. vulgatus and characterized the structure of CPS. In this study, we elucidated the structures of O-antigen polysaccharide (OPS) and lipid A in the LPS. LPS was subjected to weak acid hydrolysis to produce the lipid A fraction and polysaccharide fraction.

Glycoconjugates are distributed on the cell surfaces of some small-sized treponemes and have been reported to be com-pletely different from lipopolysaccharides. We separated a glycoconjugate fraction fromTreponema mediumATCC 700293, a medium-sized oral spirochete, to assess its immu-nobiological activities and elucidate the chemical structure of its polysaccharide part using phenol/water extraction, hydrophobic chromatography, and gel filtration.

Reduced levels of clinical or radiological pneumonia in clin- ical trials of a nine-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine provide an estimate of the vaccine-preventable disease burden (valency indicates the number of serotypes against which the vaccine provides protection; conjugate refers to conjugation of polysaccharides to a protein backbone). In a study in The Gambia, 37 percent of radiological pneumonia was prevented, reflecting the amount of disease caused by S. pneumoniae, and mortality was reduced by 16 percent (Cutts and others 2005).

Countries and donors have agreed a set of principles around aid effectiveness to address these challenges. 21 Countries will work to develop national health plans and donors will align their aid accordingly. They will also harmonize their budgets, providing separate health budget lines, with all public spending and donor financing included. Already, countries and donors are using the International Health Partnership (IHP+) to improve and harmonize their activities, reduce fragmentation and ensure that more funding flows rapidly to those who need it.

A rye kernel contains large amounts of important dietary fi bre components combined with other bioactive compounds, which have numerous positive functions for our health and well-being. Rye contains both soluble and insoluble dietary fi bre. The main dietary fi bre component in rye is the partly soluble arabinoxylan. In bread making, the cell wall polysaccharides in rye have a profound effect on the rheological properties of dough and bread. The macronutrients in rye are the same as in other cereals: starch, dietary fi bre, and protein.
